Fireball AS review is out: Fireball LM kicks its AS!!! :-(

Don't blame Quantum blame Maxtor for screwing with Quantum's concentration during that fooked up merger conception. :disgust:

AS far as I'm aware (no pun intended), the AS's development (no pun intended) wasn't in any way affected by the merger. Storagereview quoted the "excuse" for the high seektimes AS noise levels for seeks (which they admit decreased) *no pun intended. But if SCSI disks w/far lower seek times can be just AS quiet or quieter (no pun intended), this excuse won't cut the butter! 🙁 Sorry for being such a smart AS (no pun intended).

Leo your icon and your choice of the word "AS" is killing me. Was the AS really aimed to be a better performer than the LM?

[edit] I see what you mean now that i read it again.[/edit] damn what a waste of R&D.

Damn it...how can this drive hope to compete with the 75GXP? Much less the 60GXP? Or even Maxtor's DMax +45 and +60...

I'm very dissappointed...and I heard them note there would be no more Atlas 🙁 🙁 🙁

So there is only Seagate and IBM left as major players in SCSI?

Damn Quantum what's up with you guys?

ReMeDy, you can see I was having fun with the name 🙂 But look at the irony:
Fireball KA (=Kicks AS) was a winner, head and shoulders above the IDE arena
Fireball AS (=AS) is outdone by its own predecessor.
...prophetic naming by Quantum! 🙁

This 13.6GB Fireball Plus KA needs seriously reinforcements, and I'm not going to buy a slower drive to acompany this 1.5 year old loyal servant. After the blistering speed of 7200rpm KA, KX and LM series Fireball Plus drives, I was really looking toward this drive. What a dissapointment 🙁

Maybe Quantum indeed slowed the drive down in order to further combat noise and heat. Maybe access aggressivity is software-configured like I've heard the case to be with several modern IDE drives, perhaps this sort of hazardous tweaking could bring on the performance again 🙂

Time to look into other brand HDs, is IBM 75GXP series any good?
