Firearm Returns? Need input ASAP.

Update: I was able to exchange it for a different model. 🙂 Thanks for the input, guys.

Approximately one week ago, I bought a new small caliber Taurus semi-auto pistol at a local sporting goods/hardware store. It has some sort of problem. It will not even chamber a round from a clip that's over half full. After pulling back the slide and releasing it, the cartridge will be jammed in-between the clip and the barrel.

This pistol has not been fired!

I'd like to find out what policies there are for returning handguns. So far, the store is giving me the runaround. I talked to them about it the day after purchasing it, and the salesman acted like they have no responsibility in the matter and that the only possible solution would be to send it back to the factory for repairs. The manager was supposed to call me back to discuss it further. He hasn't.

As far as I'm concerned, this firearm is an unsafe piece of junk. Does anyone know if unfired handguns can ever be returned? I understand that it's instantly registered in Texas when purchased. And it's impossible to call again and unregister a defective firearm?

Appreciate any input on the matter.

what kind of store?

if its a corporation, get a hold of the main office

if its a small shop, talk to the owner

I have yet to see a place that will take returns on firearms UNLESS there is something wrong with it. so you may have a good chance of getting a replacement.

I'm not being picky when i say, it is not a clip, it is a magazine.

See if they will swap it out with another Taurus they have in stock.
Ask nicely, then they can send the BO magazine back themselves.(bad order)

The lips at the top front control the angle of the dangle for proper feed.:sun:
Do not attempt to bend them on a new weapon. I have done it on old beaters.

1. That's what you get for buying a Taurus. 😀 jk... they are alright.

2. Take it back to the store again and talk to the owner!

Clip, magazine... You guys know what I'm talking about. 🙂

They currently don't have any more of these in stock, or magazines for them.

I was thinking that the magazine could be the problem, but it actually looks like it could be a problem with the magazine catch inside the pistol. The magazine seems to stick out a little more than it should, and if I push up on the clip while cycling the slide, it will load.

edro13: Yeah, I'm starting to wonder about Taurus. I was under the impression that they made pretty good firearms. I certainly can't say much for their quality control dept at this point.

Any manufacturer can screw up. I got a couple of factory Beretta mags that seem to have weak springs and don't hold open the slide after the last round.

I've read their repair policy. If the store won't let me exchange it or get a refund, I guess that'll be the only option. The store would be sending it back. I'm not spending any more money on this thing. I won't be paying for a replacement magazine or shipping charges to send it back.

Yeah, that Taurus joke was just a... well.... joke. Taurus makes good firearms. Almost all gun manufacturers (pistols anyways) test fire around 5 shots with every single pistol before they box it up. Colt started it, but now everyone does it. I think Taurus does too.

I have never heard of a gun store allowing returns, but this sounds like a clear defect. I don't think it makes the gun dangerous, per se, except in the sense that it may be unreliable when you need it, but I would find it totally unacceptable. If they let you return it, I respectfully suggest you look at CZ pistols, or the Springfield XD-9, which are both inexpensive and higher quality than Taurus pistols.
