I just tried to replace the battery in an APC Smart UPS 600, 2 batteries. Everything was going fine until something inside the unit itself shorted out. Big blue spark, then FLAMES!!!!I could not blow it out with an air can, so I ran and got the fire extinguisher. 1 quick burst, and it was out, but the smell is terrible.

I was trying to replace the batteries in hopes of reviving this unit so I could sell it, oh well, just my luck.

Next time, I leave the replacing of batteries to Batteries Plus.

:disgust: whew, this place smells like burnt electrical and hair.

This is just not my time. I hope it gets better soon.

Man, I'm very sorry to hear that...it sucks that you were fixing it to raise some cash and it fried.

But, I gotta ask:

PICS?

Wow, It is always exciting to have something go out in flames. I remember when I was watching my 10 year old TV and suddenly a buzzing noise plus snow on the display... follow by smoke and probably flames. Pull the cord out immedately and the room was filled with smoke. The top of the TV has a huge gaping hole. Happy to buy another TV as I needed one anyway.

Didn't homer simpson have such bad times before when he had to cook breakfast for Mr. Burns that on episode....everything he touched went to flames, even cereal.

Bad times for you alright, hopefully things go better.

Hey, I warned you not to use gasoline to lubricate the new batteries so that they would slide back into the APC easily............

Well, all the magic smoke has been let out of the APC.

Anyone want a paper weight? ;)

I was stand about 30 ft. from a 100 HP electric motor that blew up 2 days ago at work. Luckily the motor was just starting to turn(maybe 50 rpm) otherwise it could have been bad. We had a fatality at work about three years ago from a 60 HP blowing at full speed(just walked away from that press 30 minutes before).

When the 100 HP blew it was like the biggest yellow camera flash you've ever seen along with the sparks that flew in every direction for about 20 ft.

I got the same results when I tried to attach 2 ups's to 1 battery. The smell smell was horrendous.

It's not fun to change the batteries in a Smart UPS 600. I've done it (though my results were slightly better). One time I was working inside a Back UPS 1250 and accidentally shorted out a connector. It made a perfect smoke ring :D :Q

I could not blow it out with an air can

Please don't tell me you tried to blow it out using a can of compressed air?!?! It's flammable! Didn't you read the warning???

No air can, I used the compressed air canister I use in the shop, I fill it up at the local QT, but as "lucky" as I have been the past few months, it was only full enough to give me a pfffftt.

I don't think the "air" in a can of compressed air is actually O2, is it??? I think it's compressed carbon dioxide..

That would be dangerous...

Yeah, that canned air (tetraflorothane or diflorothane) is extremely flammable.

Why the hell can't people, if they have updated pics to post, post them in the original post instead of making me hunt through the whole damn thread for them?

BTW, nice pics, Ulf :)

I use almost the same batteries to power the starter for my R/C plane. Sealed lead calcium? Mine is 12v 7Ah.

Well, I just tested the batteries, they are still good, but I can't return them because of the fire damage.

LOL :D  Thanks man. Now, when I decide to go look at an empty fire extinguisher, I don't have to scroll down again. ;)
