Fire extinguisher databases

I'm working for the environmental Health and Safety dept on my college campus and currently we use Acces and HanDbase software to keep track of fire extinguishers and their statuses. I want to move away from that and use some sort of hand scanner for it and put the status in using some sort of button or keyboard. Anyone have any suggestions either on the scanner system of software to use with a handheld?
