Just got my Verizon FiOS installed.
Went to PCpitstop, and cnets speed tests sites - both reported about 7mb downloads. Going to Miranda and Speakeasy both report 15mb. Any downloads I've tested all get anywhere from 6-7MB. Tested a 100mbit FTP site I have at work, and speed was 346.7kbps. When reporting that to Verizon they just stated that it depended on who was on it, blah blah blah. I was talking to the server admin while downloading from it (on port 21) and he said that 80mbit was still open and I should be getting max speed, but was only getting about 30%.
I'm wondering 1) if verizon limits port 21 on B/W. 2) how can I convince verizon that the two speed tests are the only ones showing my 15mb and everything else is showing slower.....it's very frustrating that I changed to FiOS yet, not downloading any faster.....

according to my location I am 16314 feet from the CO.
I'm running an AMD64 3500+
cat5 is hooked into my Linksys WRTG54 wireless router. Same speeds using their D-Link that was provided.
No other PCs on the network when speed was tested.
Tested with and without Zone Alarm firewall - both returned exact results.

Just because you can download faster doesn't mean sites can upload to you faster.
The sites you use could be choked for bandwidth, or have a maximum upload.
Have you tried using something like Leechget to use multiple connections to d/l files?

This would indicate however that I should be getting max from the 100mbit site:

theres still lots of other factors that come in to play. just because the site wasnt maxed out doesnt mean the connections between the two iof you were not maxed.

The load on any and all the routers inbetween you and the FTP server. You are still going over the internet which you have no control over. Try again at different times of the day, especially late at night.

Find three big downloads from three different sites and test that way. Also don't go by what your browser says use some other way to measure the speed. I use True Launch Bar.

I think what everyone is seeming to not get here is the speed on the 100mbit site is the same for me with my cable (6mb down) or with my FIOS (15mb down), yet others seem to get a much faster speed from it even with their cable. I was hoping that the 15mb down would help that and I would increase some what, at least get what others on cable were getting.

The only site I haven't tested from was microsofts, but I will when I get home....

Goto microsoft.com/windows xp

From there, download SP2 network install.. try downloading 4 at a time. than you will see how well your FIOS works... I have the 5 Meg up/ 30 meg down package.

30meg down? I'm jealous, hehe.

I tested a few things from Microsoft last night and got around 1.78MB/sec. I guess when converting bites/bytes etc that is abount what I'm suppose to be getting....

/me wants an OC12 line! LOL

Go to dslreports and test your line, your Rwindow might be too low, or your MTU, either way, using their tests can help you test the connection

yeah speakeasy and Miranda were the only 2 sites that showed the 15 down 1.8 up.

but I was getting 1.78MB from Microsoft so now I gotta talk to the owner of the 100mbit and see if he can run some tests to see if something might be blocking it.
