Hello guys, networking newb here.

Just signed up for Verizon Fios double play 64.99 (100/100 internet & TV & Digital Voice) + $10 wifi router rental + $12 STB rental = $86.99 before broadcasting fees & taxes.

I currently signed up for their $10/month Wifi Router.

Would I have been better off declining that and buying an Asus wifi router and using that so i can
-get better wifi reception
-get more speed
-get better customization of wifi (?) what would i customize anyway?

I'm a pretty basic user: PS4 + CSGO online gamine, Netflix + Hulu, 1 computer, 1 tablet, 2 laptops, 2 cell phones, 1 chromecast TV, 1 Smart TV

Myplace is a 900 sq ft apt, 2 bedroom apartment

Bonus Question: they advertised this currently on their website as 64.99 double play 100mbps internet + custom tv sports & more. But after i finished signing up, all the paperwork says Triple play and it says i have Fios Digital Voice. Did they just give me home phone service for free? They advertise a $150 Visa prepaid card for those who sign up for any triple plays. Although i didn't explicitly sign up for a triple play, it looks like thats what I have right now. Installation is this coming Weds.

Just got the fios 100/100 Internet up and running. Speedtest shows over 100 on dl and ul on my Samsung Galaxy, but much less on my oneplus one. Why would that be? My phones hardware maybe?

I'm using the rented Verizon quantum gateway wifi router and it has 2.4ghz and 5ghz. Do I just connect to any one of them? How do they work together and how does that work?

They are two different frequency bands. Some devices support only 2.4Ghz (b/g/n), and some support 5Ghz (a/n/ac).

Either band will get you internet through the router. Generally, wireless AC (802.11ac) is 5Ghz only, and is the fastest, but shorter range. 2.4Ghz has the best range, but is slower. It's a trade-off, kind of.

Just leave them both working, and connect as appropriate. I would choose different SSIDs for each frequency band (and label them 24 or 50 somewhere in the name), but you can set the same password for both (or different, as you choose).

so just add both networks as saved networks on all my devices and just let my device pick and chose which one to connect to, and try to default to the 5ghz network if possible. simple?

all my devices in my household: PC, Samsung Galaxy tab 2, Iphone 6 have all hit 100 UL / 100 DL on speedtest at one time or another. But my 2014 Oneplus One only gets 50-70 DL & UL. anyone reason why my personal phone wouldn't get 100 100? is it because the hardware is too old?

PS: getting 13ping in CS is amazing. PC is connected by wifi, but is only 10-15 feet away with service through an open door to the Verizon wifi router.

Netgear AC1450 from Ebay under $50 should do just fine. 2.4GHZ is preferable, since it increases your distance, 5GHZ isn't optimal unless you have interference issues. 2.4 vs 5 is just a radio frequency. Use 2.4 if you can.
