Fios Finally

Finally getting Verizon Fios installed tomorrow and getting off this crappy TW connection. TW actually hasn't been too bad but they have a poor offering for what they charge. 15/1 for $50/month is stupid. 30/5 is $75.

Anyways Fios is going to be installed tomorrow assuming the tech doesn't do a no-show. 75/35 connection goodness here I come.

Any Fios users and experiences?

Promo for 12 months is $50/month. Think it's $15 off normal price so $65. Once my promo is up I'll probably drop a tier to 50/25 which should be $50-55 at the time unless pricing changes. Similar pricing to TW but much faster speeds.

I've had FiOS for three years and I love it. I'm moving next week and luckily my new apartment is able to get FiOS too so I'm happy I'll be able to keep it. Great speeds and not having to worry about bandwidth caps is awesome.

Are bandwidth caps common? I've never dealt with them other than cell network providers. I've always used Cox Communications though (east coast). Great ISP TBH...

Bandwidth caps are becoming more common. Depends on the carrier. AT&T has a 250gb monthly cap. Last I heard they weren't enforcing but I can't say now.

Had Cox Comm in Oklahoma and they were great. Always got speeds higher than I paid, never had a problem and prices were pretty good. Think I paid something like $30 month for 20/5 service and consistently got 30/10. I was satisfied.

Yup I've had Fios from essentially when they turned it on in MA and overall its been a decent experience. Let me establish here are my general complaints with any cable company:
1st no option to purchase you box
2nd no real option to have a DVR that doesn't somehow add to your monthly bill
3rd although this isn't so extreme with fios but its still there, new customer promotions tend to be too aggressive and I find it insulting that I constantly need to cancel and resign up to get the best promotions.

I've had FIOS for 4 years and love it. I might be moving soon and one of the top priorities for buying a new house is that it has to have FIOS.

1 and 2 are kind of true, but not exactly. While you can't purchase your own Verizon box there is the option for cablecard tuners. Either tuners that work through an HTPC like the Ceton InfiniTV or HD Homerun Prime or standalones like the Tivo and Moxi units are available. I use an InfiniTV4 in an HTPC and prefer it because there is no monthly fee for guide listings like there is with Tivo. With the above you only pay for cablecard rental from Verizon with, iirc, is $3.99/month.

While there are some drawbacks to using cablecard tuners (no On Demand or PPV) the additional capabilities like using extenders to other TVs in the house and being able to stream movies and music from a server outweigh the drawbacks. Also, for On Demand you can always use Amazon, Vudu, Hulu, HBO Go, EpixHD, etc. and for PPV you just have to make a phone call and then tune in the proper channel.

arent 1 and 2 true for pretty much all cable companies ?

I was looking at Fios tv service but because they charge a ridiculous amount each month for the equipment I'm just going with internet. I can watch everything online a couple days after it's aired. So no big deal. Sports I'll have to watch another way but thus is life.

I might consider the cable card option at some point but not for now.

How does their tv service compare to directv? That's who I've had and just canceled since I'm moving. Been doing ota for the past month and I'm not feeling like I'm missing out on too much. Usually pretty busy.

If you're complaining about equipment costs, buy your own modem and get a Ceton InfiniTV and just ask FiOS for the cable card. Its a no hassle process.

You get free DVR and either 4 or 6 tuners on one card depending on which Ceton you get. All you need is an extender to get it to the different TVs around the home.

I love the FiOS picture quality compared to TWC. I don't need much internet speed for browsing and gaming, so I have their lowest option at 20/5.

Internet got installed a couple hours ago. Speeds are ridiculous. Pulling 80/40 consistently. Purchased BF4 yesterday and was holding off on the download since I was studying for an exam this morning. Downloaded all 24gb's of BF4 and installed in 35 minutes! Didn't think the EA servers could deliver the game that fast.

Didn't go with their TV service. Don't need cable currently. Have more certifications to study for and other things to do with my free time than be distracted by cable.

Also wanted to add that I'm pretty impressed with the modem/router combo Verizon gives you. It's an Actiontec MI424WR. Was going to put an Asus RT-AC66U behind it for wireless and routing duties, but I may be taking that back now. I still needed to get an AC adapter for my system and the Fios installer ran a cable to the room I needed.

No mobile devices with AC yet so I'm fine with N. The range is pretty good and the speeds are good. Not going to tap the connection over wifi but don't need to any time soon.
