Her cover of Across the Universe is better than the original. I hate Fiona Apple. How is this possible?

It is only one song?

"mathematically" quite false. She is a good artist and all, but this happens. I like nine inch nails, but I still think Johnny Cash's cover of hurt is amazing (still not better than the version on "further")

So a cover song may be better than an original from time to time, this should not automatically throw out the artists hard work on the rest of their collection. If it does, then you are not really a music fan, but don't feel bad, there are millions of you around. Clear channel communications is a shining beacon that you fucking lamers exist.

Apples and oranges.

heh.

I like them both, and Rufus Wainwright's too.

With covers, it's often subjective whether the original is "the best" and choosing your favorite doesn't mean you have to label other versions as far inferior. Some random examples:

Little Wing - Jimi, Concrete Blonde, SRV, even Sting's version are all good.

Hallelujah - I prefer Jeff Buckley to Cohen's original but I enjoy both

Jealous Guy - Bryan Ferry's over Lennon's by a hair but again, that's just my preference.

Ship Song - loved the Nick Cave original, and the covers by both Concrete Blonde and Heather Nova, all good.

Persuasion - Richard Thompson's original instrumental was good, Tim Finn's version with lyrics added was better, and RT with Teddy Thompson covering Finn's version was best of all.

i actually prefer the beatles 'let it be (naked)' version of 'across the universe' better than all other versions. but i do think fiona's version is a very respectful cover and i also enjoyed rufus'.

I like Fiona and her cover of universe is good, tho i wouldn't call it better, just different.

Another cover i like is Thea Gilmore's version of Springsteen's 'Cover Me', quite different and both are good. Thea's version is much slower and softer.

I like Fiona's better. It's pretty rare for a cover to top the original, but it does happen, and this is one of those.

Considering the Beatles play instruments and wrote the song, they win.

She gets points for having a good voice for it and having good producers working for her.
