Finishing a build- help me choose memory and vidcard

Hello all-
I'm in the process of building a new system. Drives, case, power and peripherals are all coming from my current system. I've purchased an MSI K8N Neo4-F and an AMD 3500+ NewCastle from this nice guy over in the For Sale forum.

So now, I have to pick up memory and a video card. The MB is picky- it wants single-sided memory, DDR400, matched sizes and densities in order to work with dual channel. So I expect to spend $90-125 depending on the best deal I can find, and come home with a gig of dual-channel.

With the remaining $50 or less, what video card would you choose? I'm used to an 8500 so I expect that anything modern will wow me.

um, really, you're not going to get anything worth getting for gaming anyways with 50 dollars on the vid card. The best deal imo on graphx cards is the 7800gts, but those are 350.
The cheaper 6600gts are also good deals at around 150 i think
or wait until the radeonx1800xt comes out and pushes other prices down.

Hey Hammer...funny seeing you here...lol

I didn't read whose thread this was but I will throw my 2 cents in anyways 🙂

If you want to play newer games you're going to need at least a 6600gt, which you can find in the trading forums for under $150 sometimes. If you want something that will really get the job done, you could go for an X800XL. Of course an X850XT PE can be had for under $300 at other trading forums as well. Go check out Tom's Hardware's VGA charts to help you decide.

Just get some Corsair or OCZ ValueRAM.

🙂 yeah, you know the board and CPU for sure 🙂

I'm getting somethign cheap to get me by until I can buy a better card. Right now, HL2 and San Andreas are as modern as I get, and they both play on that 8500. Will an X300 or the like at least improve over the old 8500?

Well, I sent money out today. Got a gig of Geil (2x512) and a refurb 6200. It'll get me by for a few months until I can buy bigger and better.

Thank you for the advice.
