I just finished reading 1984 and wow was that a good book. The last like 40 pages were kinda hard to get through but very well written. It really gets ya thinking lol. After reading that book and finding that i really liked even though it wasnt very exciting, anyone have a good suggestion for the next one i should read. Any books that are thought provoking like 1984? I also read fantasy books.
 
I guess it's a decent book... i think its overhyped... my favorite book ever: Crime and Punishment. Read it if you haven't yet.
 
If you want thought provoking read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. You'll spend almost as much time thinking about it as you do reading it. Which is quite impressive considering it's like 800 pages iirc. It's an absolutely incredible read, though. I don't think I've ever talked to anyone who hasn't liked this book. It can get a little preachy in parts but other than that it's perfect.

agreed. outside of the 80 page John Galt speach, which I skimmed over after the first 10 pages, I loved every word. very thought provoking, and I actually met a lot of people while reading that book. people would see me reading it at work and, having read the book themselves, we'd get into great discussions about what Ayn Rand is saying and whether or not her ideas have practical applications in the real world.


At the moment, I'm re-reading the Lord of the Rings series. I appreciate it so much more as an adult than I did as a kid, I think. There are a lot of nuances in Tolkein's writing style that annoyed me as a kid but are really interesting as a more mature reader.

After that's done, I have one more Ayn Rand book to read before I'll have read them all.

1984 & Brave New World are books seperated at birth. If you loved the former read the latter. Also keep in mind that BNW was written in the early 1900's . . . i.e. the discussions of issues like birth control and the like are from before the concept really existed. It's interesting to see how many things he got right (and how many he got wrong as well).

Also, two books that are very thought provoking in a very non political sense :

For the analytic mind : Ficciones by Bourges.

For the emotional mind : 100 Years of Solitude (now avaliable anywhere for $2 or so since it became Oprah's new obsession . . . I really wonder what your average 'O' watcher gets from this book)

I wish i was a fast reader. I take forever to read a book. My brothers GF reads a book in like a day. She like reads lines at a time, instead of reading each word.

That really irks me...



Anyway, as for speed of reading, there are many ways of reading. Skimming through a book like Brave New World, however, is fringing on criminal.

Think there was a book called "How to read like a literature professor - 12 ways of reading" or something like that. Might help you.
 
Ender's Game is a sweet book, Ender's Shadow is cool as well but read Game first. Also, try out Great Train Robbery by Michael Crichton. The incredible planning that went into that heist is mind-boggling! It almost made me want to go steal a shipment of gold off my local railroad transportation system! 🙂
