I read it the first time years before the movie came out, and when I watched the film I thought it followed the book pretty closely.
On re reading it I must say it DID NOT! There were MANY MANY changes in the movie.
That having been said, I think I liked the movie version of the story better.

What are the thoughts of others here that have read the story and seen the film?

SPOILERS. DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE STORY OR SEEN THE MOVIE. Just a FYI: The original story was "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption", and it was the first story in Stephen King's book "Different Seasons". The movie Stand By Me was also based on another story from the same book called "The Body". Apt Pupil also came from the story "Apt Pupil" in Different Seasons. (IMHO, the movie Apt Pupil SUCKED compared to the story.)

I thought the movie followed the book pretty closely, although there were some changes from the book. Nothing really majorly different, although the stuff with Brooks hanging himself and whatnot didn't happen in the book, that I recall. Red was the one who worked at the grocery store when he got out, and he didn't actually meet up with Andy at the very end like he did in the movie. It's implied that he was going to go find Andy at the end of the book, though. Also, Andy didn't lock himself up in the office with the record player and the opera music like he did in the movie.

There's other stuff, but I can't recall exactly what was different at the moment. I will say that that is definitely one of the best book to movie adaptations I've ever seen.

There are many, but one big one was "the Kid". In the movie he was killed "trying to escape" in the story he was transfered to a differant jail ( to shut him up ).

In the book "Red" is a white guy with red hair.

In the book "Brooksie" doesn't kill himself.

In the book there are several differant wardens and "screws".

The list goes on and on.

EDIT: BTW they filmed "Stand By Me" here in Eugene Oregon! A friend of mine has the sign that hung outside the junk yard, it now hangs on the wall of his living room! What do you suppose THAT would fetch on Ebay!?!?
