For those who have never taken ages to finish a title which was released 2-3 years ago, kindly skip the following.
Frankly speaking, the game difficulty doesn't scale up too well towards the last few levels in terms of shoot-em-up toughness. The supposedly big bosses e.g. Walton Simons fell way too easy (granted I was advanced or master in heavy weapons and rifle). The head honcho, your "creator" was a laughable James Bond villain type. The only tough portions were the earlier stages when skill levels were mediocre. From then on the level of firepower and augmentation was simply too much for the opposition.
The storyline was not as non-linear and super-replayable as some hyped it to be. The moral/ethical choices angle was only felt during the early chapters when your brother tended to chastise or praise you depending on the body count you racked up. Even then that did hardly anything to alter the course of the plot. Things sort of get into the typical 3DFPS rut until the final level, when you're offered three static endings to choose from. The endings themselves were hardly rewarding, with all except the Illuminati option being nothing more than slapping a famous quote on the screen.
I guess the better part of Deus Ex was the journey in between. My hunger for sub-plots was quite satisfied, the realisation of international cities were bland and uninspiring, graphics were serviceable despite being sadly Glide-optimised, gore level was above average. The most notable sore point is JC Denton's frustrating chastity. At one point there was this whole level with a posh empty mansion with just me and this French chick and all I could do was search for some boring computer terminal?!?! Geez did they have to take that whole Biblical reference thing THAT far?
THE END
