I had been planning to do it for a while, also resolved to burn a couple of cds a day last week. Today, I finally did it..
My movie and p0rn collection is finally backed up!
So are most of my mp3s and, most importantly, data files and scanned bills.

I've been using Sony 48x burner w/ Sony 700 MB CDrs.. I think I am going to buy a 50 pk soon at the rate I have been burning cds this evening.
:)

Hard drives go bad, it's an unfortunate fact of life. If one does, you lose everything, obviously. If a cd were to go bad, you'd lose only that cd, and they generally don't. They're also not quite as fragile. Dunno what the big deal is though, I probably burn about 20-30 a week ;)

I know. But this way, I can keep (atleast the data files) at a location other than my home, just in case...

I'm sure you paid for all that pr0n you have too ;)

I think newnameman mentioned RIAA == mp3s. The pr0n industry seems to be okay with downloading.

Man I wish I waited for dual layer... 9GB on 1 disc is just sweet.

I would love to get a dvd burner, and have been reading about the dvd +/- etc. mess. The day I think I have figured it out (which will be soon, hopefully) I will go ahead and buy it. Right now, however, I have 2 cd burners in my house, and plenty of cds. And lots of time to kill as well.

Yep, waiting on a starndard myself. CDs are also cheaper and possibly better-manufactured (remember how CD-Rs used to be so-so?), and 12x DVD burners are just around the corner.

They made it around the corner. Now about $80 on sale.

I burn 30+ cd-rs a week easy with no movies and no p0rn. (books)

CD's do go bad too :)

either way dvd's or cdrs are a good way of storing data, but i think dvd's are getting so cheap is better to go DVD's these days

Dual Layer media is spendy but that has dropped in price since its starting to go mainstream.

The harddrive backup is still a good idea.

Go with external USB drive that you can plug in when needed to backup, or, as I do, backup to another PC on the LAN. That way important stuff gets backed up right away, instead of 'when I get around to burning it'. Really important stuff (pics we take with our digicam) I backup to other system AND to CD AND when I have 4.3GB, to DVD.

There may never be one standard. Get a drive that does both +/-. Simple as that.

 I should pay more attention heheh... While on the subject, are the dual layers out and working properly, or still bleeding edge & buggy? What do the drives and ~10gb dvd r's cost on average? (12x drive & media)

Optical media speeds seems to trail the specified speed of the drives by such a large margin at times, that it often doesn?t seem worth buying a cutting edge drive, unless the price premium is small. You end up paying big bucks for a drive that handles faster media, but by the time the media is affordable, the drives are half price and writes twice as fast. 12X CD-RW discs seemed to take forever to materialize, for example. Not sure how many people bother with CD-RW though with CD-R being so cheap?

DVD+RW Dual Layer (DL) drives are available at such a small premium, that they seem worth a punt. But with write speeds of 2.4X against typically 8X, they start to seem less attractive. It would be good to shrink my Mp3 collection down to 14 discs though :) The law of diminishing returns with disc burning speeds suggests to me that the 8X is a reasonable enough sweet spot.

These I back up on an old hard drive, since if it dies I still have a copy on the hdd in my rig. I use CDs when I'll be deleting it off my hard drive.

2.4x for 8.5 gb will take about an hour
2 4.7gb disc only takes me about 22min:thumbsdown:
