OK, here's the deal....I move back at the beginning of July. Didn't actually move my belongings in to the new house until July 3rd, but I brought my laptop and cable modem over to the new house to meet the installer on July 2nd. He shows up, looks at my cable modem and asks me where I moved from. I tell him, and he says it won't work in this area, and that he'll have to swap that out for a new modem. No biggie...he has one on the truck. Gets the modem, hooks it up, and everything is working.
He says that since I am moving from a different area, my digital cable boxes wouldn't work either, and that I'd need new boxes here, too. I tell him I don't have the cable boxes on me, and that they are still in the moving truck. Again, no biggie, he has digital boxes in the truck and gives me two of those. Tells me I can just return those boxes to the local Comcast office down the street from me when I get them unpacked. He packs up, leaves, and takes my old cable modem with him.
A week or so later after I get all unpacked I take my old boxes to Comcast and they check them in. This was around July 9. The lady at the counter mentions that I still have a modem out. I tell her the story, she does some checking, and says the installer hasn't checked the ticket in yet. She says not to worry, he has until July 14 to check it in, and that it shouldn't be a problem.
Well, guess what? I get a letter from Comcast in the mail today indicating that I have unreturned equipment on the account that was closed when we moved. I call the customer service line and sure enough, one unreturned cable modem. What sucks is I don't have the paperwork that the installer left. I think my wife or I threw it away when we were unpacking! I explain this to the rep on the phone and she says it will take her a couple of days but she can get a copy of the receipt that they keep on file.
So, my question is, have ya'll ever had this happen? I'm going to be beyond pissed if I end up having to pay them for the modem that I rightfully returned. I'm sure I have absolutely no recourse if they come back and say "Nope, we ain't got it, now you owe use one hundred and fifty million dollars!" Do you think they may just write it off to the contractor not returning/losing the modem? If not, anyone know what they charge for this?
I hate Comcast, and have been toying with the idea of going to satellite and DSL. This may just push me over the edge if I have to foot the bill. Next time I'll know to hold on to the equipment and return in to the office myself.
