Finding the number of shaded pixels in an image?

This is really corny, but I've got these jpg images of some spectroscopy data, and one of the things I'm supposed to do for a lab report is to take their integral. I'm thinking that I can approximate this by counting up the number of shaded pixels.

Any software that can help me do this, or do I have to go manually poking around counting?
Thanks! 🙂
