Finding the best CPU+Mobo Combo..

Hey,

Summer time is here once again and, as I do every year, it's time to consider and explore my options in the world of upgrading 😛

This year, however, is different than most, as there are brand new things out on the market that are now coming down in price (I.E. Athlon 64), and I just can't decide on what I want, however, I know what I need..

Regardless of the processor, I've been looking around for a decent motherboard that doesn't have all of the useless bells and whistles I don't need (Onboard sound/video etc..). This has actually proven to be quite difficult as the computer shops near me carry only motherboards from the most "mainstream" manufacturers.. (Abit, Asus, ECS, MSI..) In the past, I've only ever had Asus motherboards, and I've never been happier, however, I have read good things about Gigabyte and I'm open to new boards.

My issue with motherboards now is.. PCI Express. Do I get a board with this option now so that I wont be forced to worry about it later? (As of now, I don't have any plans to upgrade my video card in the near future..but Christmas time arrives with new possibilities..)

The next area of issue...processor.

I've read many reviews on the AMD Athlon 64 as well as Pentium 4 chips with HT. The concept of 64bit amuses me, but I'd only be able to really "take advantage" of it when using Fedora Core as I don't have the 64bit Windows XP version and don't really plan on purchasing it.

I've always been a hardcore AMD fan ever since our family bought their first machine (an AMD) back many years ago. It breaks my heart to say that Intel probably is the solution for me. The only problem is, I don't know that much about them 😕

So if anybody can suggest a good "basic" (by that I mean none of that audio/video onboard junk) motherboard for either Intel or AMD (even non-64). Feel free to leave any other suggestions or comments that could help me with my decision 🙂

Cheers,

Most standard ATX mobos don't have integrated video - that's reserved for microATX. All have integrated sound which can be disabled if you really don't want to use it. Really the only diff between mobos with the same chipset is whatever extras are on there like SATA, FW, RAID, SCSI, etc. Just pick a good brand for the CPU you decide on and you'll likely be happy with it.
. Of course always check as many reviews of the mobos on your short list as possible to find out if there are any show-stoppers and minor quibbles with them.
