Bah! i been looking to take a basic woodworking class. I have been searching google and local CC pages for a week now!

All the classes i find are in toward chicago. I live just south of rockford. i can't drive 2 hours anymore.

sigh. just wanted to take a class to learn the basics and get away from the wife heh.

Buy some unfinished furniture. Try putting a nice finish on it, including all the requisite sanding, sanding, more sanding, sealing, conditioning, staining, blending, varnishing, steel-wooling, varnishing, more steel wool, more varnish... and when you're done, behold the mediocre results! If you still want to take classes after that... I'll be surprised!

I could have sworn I saw this exact reply over a week ago. Except the last sentence may have been tailored to the context of the previous thread.

heh i have built a picnic table (little wobbly but thats ok!) and a workbench (ugly as sin but works) and really enjoyed myself.

just figure a class would show me how to use tools properly and make jointe etc.

If you've done all that, you should be OK with general home owner tasks. Buy a book for each project and you'll be a pro in no time!

I just have no patience for furniture building. It's all I can do to make a simple shelf presentable. Takes way too much effort for a good finish. My dad and father-in-law dabble with furniture projects... Damn good thing they didn't try to make a living at it!
