Drive is recognized in Laptop and I've tied new drivers, etc but appears to be a HW issue...Thinking of installing a new drive and/or just buying a USB drive for it... Will any "laptop" DVD I buy at NewEgg, etc work?

If you Key is not written on the laptop itself (like on the bottom) then it's embedded in the BIOS. If you can't recover the key from that installation, then you'll have difficulty getting that key back unless you acquire original Acer Installation media. If they key is outside, then you should be able to install any matching edition and install it. Activation could occur automatically if its in the BIOS, or you may need to furnish that key.

Of course, if you're buying a new and legitimate copy of Windows, then you can just use the key that comes with that instead of your OEM key.

OP, are you asking about a replacement DVD drive for your laptop? If so, getting an external USB one like you said is probably the easiest way to go.

just about any external optical drive will work

you can also get a win7 image and transfer the installation to a USB and boot from that

plenty of disposable win7 and win8.1 keys out there, you can also buy them for a few dollars online

something i despise about win7 installations in 2019, is the extremely long process of annoying updates with SP1, especially with a C2D laptop, could take a couple dozen hours even on high speed internet.
