Finding a mouse that meets my needs is kind of difficult. Help me out.

I have the following requirements:

- In addition to right click, left click and middle click, I require at least two additional buttons that can be programmed to invoke Mission Control (typically this would be the Fwd/Back buttons). This is possible through Logitech Control Center, but I've found that not all Logitech mice work with Logitech Control Center.

- I would like a non-metal scroll wheel. I hate those stupid Logitech metal scroll wheels. I never use the fast scrolling mode, I find it difficult to middle click without accidentally scrolling, and I've worn the shiny finish off one side of mine, and now it's all rough and coppery looking.

I have the following preferences:

- I like Logitech
- I strongly prefer a fingertip mouse like this: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/anywhere-mouse-mx not a whole hand mouse like this: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/gaming-mouse-g500?crid=7
- Wireless would be nice, but it's not absolutely required
- Under $80 would be nice
- More programmable buttons would be a big plus

With Logitech it seems like if you want to have programmable buttons, you have to put up with the metal scroll wheel. They have some gaming mice with rubber scroll wheels that would be perfect (e.g. http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Gamin...I3CBRW2I8L383A), but the ones I've found that meet my specifications are not advertised as working with Mac OS. Of course this doesn't mean they don't work with Mac OS, but I have no way of knowing what amount of functionality I'll get out of the mouse. Is there any third party software that would let me use something like the mouse I linked with my Mac?

Beyond Logitech I don't even know who makes a good mouse for Macs. I don't expect I'd get much more than basic functionality out of a Microsoft mouse.

FWIW my current mice are a Logitech VX Revolution and a Logitech Anywhere MX. I really like both except for the metal scroll wheels. The one on the Anywhere MX is really starting to annoy me with the rough texture, so I'm replacing it.

I have the gen 2 Logitech M705 Marathon. Has an aluminum scroll wheel that does not react to my skin, which makes it better than the steel one that is on my gen 1 M705. Has 3 side buttons.

Can't comment on LCC and all that since every time I had installed it in the past it had jacked with acceleration and scrolling speeds and I couldn't dial in the settings I like with it.

I use Logitech mice, but I do not like the Logitech Control Center. For button mapping, I use SteerMouse. I have yet to use a mouse that it cannot configure.

Awesome, I figured something like that would exist. They have some Logitech gaming mice in their "Recommended Mice" list, so I assume that means all of those extra buttons will be programmable.

All the buttons are programmable on every Logitech mouse I've ever used: Performance MX, M705 Marathon, VX Revolution, MX 620 and MX 440.

Love my Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000. Actually, MS makes great mice that work just fine with OSX, with full feature support.

The 5000 fits my hands perfectly, and best of all has 5 global/app-specific programmable buttons, side scroll and scroll click, etc. It's the best mouse I've ever used for Final Cut, and I've tried quite a few.

I have no complaints with the Intellimouse software for Mac. The blue-track technology is great too, it works on any surface (bare tabletop, glass, carpet, etc.) In typical MS fashion though, they list NOTHING about their mice's true features on their product packaging.

I used to be strictly logitech, but for the past five years or so I've been a total convert to Microsoft mice on the Mac.

I can't handle Microsoft's scroll wheels, though maybe they've changed them in the last couple years.

Welp, unfortunately the "G" buttons on the G600 did not work with Steermouse. But it also really sucked at tracking movement on two different mouse pads, so I had already decided to return it before I realized that the extra buttons wouldn't work. Sucks, I was really looking forward to playing Starcraft with a 20 button mouse.

G300 is still an option, and I'll look around and see if I find any other good Logitech mice without the metal scroll wheel.

I had one Microsoft mouse, and the scroll wheel was awful. I'll stop by my local Amazon.com showroom tomorrow and see if they're any better now. It looks like they're not big on the metal scroll wheels like Logitech is.

It's not just that, but the Logitech ones just click sooo nice when you scroll them.

Thanks for the help everyone. I tried some MS mice and thought the scroll wheels were still terrible. I bought the G300 that was listed on the Steermouse website, and it's perfect. All of the buttons work, rubber scroll wheel, smooth cursor movement.

I realized that mice apparently send button clicks as 16 bit integers, with each bit representing one button. The G600 I tried had more than 16 buttons, so it must use some other method to send clicks of higher numbered buttons, probably something that requires Logitech's drivers to interpret. Steermouse would probably work with any mouse with 16 or fewer buttons.

Now I need to buy Steermouse and another G300. And figure out what I want to use all of these buttons for.
