finding a job across the country

So I just got done with college, I think I have some pretty good work experience, except I'm living in a rural area where I don't care for the climate or anything. As a networking/unix/security guy this isn't good. I really think I'll dig seattle and plan on taking a trip there in a week or two to see how I like it. How would you go about getting a job in an area like that though. If I apply with a company's website will they offer to fly me there for an interview, offer me an interview on my time, or will they just all pass me over for a local candidate anyway? I haven't submitted any resumes just yet, but I'm curious to see what I'm in for.

Theres some anxiety about packing up and leaving what you know for the unknown far away, but I'm more concerned about how employers will view me first. If you've done this, or are in hiring or something I'd love to hear from you.

Unless you have tons of work experience, don't expect to be flown there. They'll do online & phone interviews + a local company representative may interview you in person before you get flown to be interviewed by the big guys.

you never know.. even fresh-out-of-college kids get flown for interviews... unless this has changed since 2000. The big firms will do it.

Yeah one of my friends who started looking before the semester was over was flown around by IBM before being hired so it happens at least sometimes still 🙂

its tougher for exp'd folk to get flown out..easier for college students since they can do on-campus interviews.

Good luck!

Unless your Chelsea Clinton I don't think the company will fly you out for an interview. If you manage to land an interview, I would jsut tell the company you are in the process of moving to Seattle. Or you could always lie and find a local address to use. I can vouch for the fact that that works pretty well sometimes.

im flying to portland on thursday for an interview on friday in newport oregon.
on my own dime, i might add. its a govt job, so i didnt even ask if they would pay. i already know that answer.

there is a second round interview on monday, but they said i can do that by phone.

Man, that's rough. I'd never pay to go to an interview... but I don't plan to work for the government either.

I've had all my internship interviews on the phone. I was flown out for a grad school interview, and all the "real" job interviews I had were paid for. I thought it was assumed.
