Finding a 500 watt ps with high quality electronics ?

I am assembling a system that will be a basic Core 2 Duo / 9800GT setup. I'd like to use a 500 or so watt power supply constructed from high quality parts. I don't mind spending the extra bucks, the problem is finding such a part.

The search has been frustrating. After reading a couple of solid reviews, I had been planning on going with the Antec Earthwatts 430. Now I have found out this unit is now made by Delta rather than Seasonic (who made the model that was reviewed). Apparently the move to Delta was a cost cutting measure, resulting in a different design containing cheaper parts. The glowing reviews of the Seasonic EA430 can be thrown out the window, and no one cares to review the Delta revision.

So then I thought, just go with PC Power and Cooling. Just for the heck of it I then read the review of their 500 watt unit on Anandtech and saw that they too are using some capacitors from a questionable source.

I am probably being overly critical here, but I am just looking for a top quality power supply with electronics provided by known, high quality vendors. From what I've seen, so many of the name brands use so many different manufacturers, picking a power supply is like opening a box of chocolates. I'd like to think I could pick out a supply by simply looking at the brand name (and know that it is 100% quality), but now I don't think there is even one supplier like that.

And what is the deal with making capacitors ? I have little knowledge in this area, but in this day and age, how hard can it be to make inexpensive capacitors that are reliable ? Apparently, it is pretty difficult.

Do you have something against that actual Seasonic branded supplies? S12-II and M12-II are their high quality units. S12-II ranges from 330-500W and M12-II is 430 and 500W.

I've never seen a negative review of these units in any aspect of their performance. Is there something I haven't seen on these?

Yeah how much do you want to spend? There are plenty of units under $120 that were as good or better than the Seasonic built EA 500...for one...the PC Power and Cooling that you poo pooed used the EXACT same OST and Nippon Chemicon capacitors as the EA500...in fact it is basically the same PSU except the Silencer has a higher rated Primary capacitor than the EA500.

Also as Concillian and dangman pointed out the Corsair line and Seasonic's own line...the PC Power and Cooling 610W Silencer

Xoxide has the Silverstone Zeus 650W at $125

The Delta made EA650 was well reviewed here:

The above reviews bodes well for the Delta made EA430.

Someone posted a photo of the internals which proved the capacitors were from some of the questionable sources, not the quality ones that were in the Seasonic version.

I do not mean to say that there is anything for sure wrong with the Delta unit or the PCP&C unit, they are probably just fine. I've been careful about selecting my other components and want to do the same with the ps.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I'll take a look at all those options tonight.

define questionable sources???
If you are talking about TEAPO caps then you are very mistaken.
JonnyGuru has come out in the past and stated that TEAPO Caps are just fine with proper ventilation. I also believe JonnyGuru might have stated that Teapo Caps do not appear to have issues in PSU`s.....now motherboards are another issue...
Correct me if I am wrong...thx

The questionable source remark was what I took from reading this quote from the Silencer 500W review on Anandtech.

There is a Nippon Chemi-Con cap installed on the primary circuitry, and the secondary features wildly placed OST RLX and RLS series capacitors. OST are often used by Seasonic, but they don't have the best reputation.
.

I was kind of surprised to see that comment in a PCP&C review, becuase I've always heard they used the highest quality parts internally. Maybe that comment by the reviewer is not justified, but I don't have time to research every bit of information.

To update my situation, I decided to go with the PC Power and Cooling 610 W silencer.

I was a little concerned about going with a 600 watt unit, becuase my idle load will be around only 130w and the maximum load will probably only be about 230 watts. The reviews proved that even at those low wattages, this model is still at 80% efficiency or greater. I figure pulling such a small load will result in very quiet and cool operation at all times with no downside, so I'm gonna go for it.

Thanks for the comments.

As I already said...you would have found those same OST capacitors in the Antec Earthwatts 430W that was built by Seasonic. I am not aware that OST has a bad reputation in power supplies, maybe on motherboards. But as JEDIYoda already pointed out, motherboards are a whole different animal.

Really you were setting your price level fairly low if you were looking for top quality parts in a 500W PSU. Stuff like the Silencer 610 is more in line with having higher quality parts.

OST is like Teapo. They have a notorious reputation on motherboards, but in power supplies they're fine. Seasonic has used OST since DAY ONE. How many stories do you hear about failed Seasonics with swollen caps? I know I haven't heard any.
