Find XP Home Key during Reinstall of XP

OK, I am looking to find out the XP Home Product Key. I am aware of the "Magicjellybean" and various other utilities that will easily provide the key if the system is running. Unfortunately, I thought the key was available and started the 'repair' process with the XP Home CD. I discovered that I didn't have the key when the repair process asked for the key and it could not be found. Now when I reboot, it goes back into setup and I can't run these great nifty utilites to extract the key for me. I have pulled the harddrive and hooked it up to another PC to try and find the key, but no luck.

Anybody know how to find the XP Home Key from a DOS prompt or any other ideas on how to retrieve it?

I appreciate your help.

Thanks!

Nope the key is encrypited so I don't think there is a way to get it now.

I always grab the keb before I start doing ANYWORK.

Get the OS and office Key and save them to a txt file on the USB keychain. Then IF they don't have it WALA I do 😉

At this point I think you may be screwed. I take it they did not put the sticker on thecase 😉

The key was not on the case. I found the actual sleeve that the XP Home came in and the orginal manual in their mobo box, but no key. I usually grab the key, but was told they had it and didn't verify it. In the future, I will certainly take no chances in this area. For now, I am hoping that the key hasn't been wiped and that there is a way to retrieve it.

I am not having any luck with the Magicjellybean key finder. Since I am in the middle of a setup/repair process, I can't get the system up, it always reverts back to setup mode. To my knowledge, I haven't found a utility that will work if the system is booted to a DOS prompt. I have tried attaching the drive as a secondary on another PC and looked at all the log files, but no luck in finding the key.

I really hate the idea that I may have to purchase yet another copy of XP Home just because of a dump error in not retrieving the key code before the hardware changes.

just *a*ez' it. You already own HOME. Just get xp c()rp and think of it has xp home. Pretty stupid to buy another if you already supported MS with the legal home which can't be used anymore.

Oh Yeah.

Better yet buy a OEM copy of XP Home and charge them for it.

I once sold a ME licence for $75 buck because they had a FRIEND format the hardrive and they could not find the CD KEY 😉 I sold them one we had and would have never used.

Just call Microsoft, with the part number off the CD, they will generate a new key for you, though depending on who you get, they may charge you $10...

Thanks for all your input. I will try the option of calling Microsoft to get a new key generated. Heck, $10 is cheap compared to $70 to get a new OEM version of the software. I also prefer to keep everything on the up and up with the XP operating system.
