I'm seriously considering these Sony's. Do you guys have any better suggestions?

Some ground rules:
  • I'm not a hardcore audiophile.
  • I have a Sony STR-DE915 receiver (100w/channel, DTS, 5.1DD,etc...)
  • Right now my front speakers are some pretty old bookshelf single 8" woofer 3-way Altec Lansings.
  • I know many people don't like Sony, but I do.
  • But I'm definitely not hooked on Sony, or any other brand.
  • Has to be a local (Beaverton/Portland OR) store like Circuit City, Best Buy, Good Guys, etc...
  • I would seriously consider (prefer?) building a set.
  • I'm not going to lie to you... The silver covers on those Sony's sure would look good with the rest of my HT equipment.
My current setup.

What do you think? :)

you could have gotten these online for $150/ pair (originally $499/pair) online but I think they sold out.

But you can still check Best Buy B&M in Beaverton (two pairs last time I checked) and Portland

Polk Audio r50's

I bought the r40's about 3 years ago, and I love them. They have nice mids/bass, and they can get loud. I don't know if you'll be able to find them at a B&M store though. Good Guys use to carry Polk Audio, but I don't believe they do anymore.

Edit: That MSRP is just the MSRP. I found them on the internet for 199 Each on the intarweb :)

Meet me at the stoplight at 5th & Main. I'll be in the white van with out of state plates.

What are you doing looking for speaker advice without asking the man!? Send me a PM man, haven't talked to you in forever.

EDIT: As a side note, Sony speakers are quite possibly the worst you could buy. Sony is one of those companies that does everything fairly well.... except speakers. That is probably their worst product.

I second Viper GTS's comment on GR Research if you can afford it...other than that, for a cheap pair of speakers, JBLs will quite well, as would a pair of Mini Monitors (Paradigm). I wouldn't really look into towers at that pricepoint, unless you're buying used.

Good luck!

Never mind my post, they don't fir either your bill or location. But Boston makes some great speakers.
Agreed. I have a Boston setup. I love it, and it wasn't insanely expensive.

I miss my old Boston A40 bookshelf speakers. Those were sweet.
Need to find myself a new pair.

:p

Another suggestion: Fluance. I've never heard them myself but reviews I've read say they have good sound and build quality considering the rock-bottom prices. I know it's not local but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Re-read what you posted. Will go with Viper's DIY suggestion rather than Axiom.

I ended up getting the R50's. I am very satisfied, and I'm quite sure that I couldn't have done better for the money. :)
