Find me a TV!

My family instructed me that they're finally ready to splurge on a new TV for our entertainment center. I was given a soft cap of $2000. Going for highest value, best "bang for the buck" approach. Quote was "No restrictions on size and we're not looking to spend $5,000 but we want to get something that is very good at a reasonable or better than reasonable price."

Any suggestions? Don't think they'd be into a projector, but I'll keep my options open. I have to be the salesman if it's something I support.

Thanks for the assistance.

samsung 46" dlp -- 1689

great TV, they also have the 50" for under $2000 --- but after shipping it would go over.

BTW, that store has a great rating on reseller ratings - i wish i had known about them before i bought mine from circuit city... could have saved a few bucks.

Thanks for that suggestion. I'm looking at it.

$2000 is a soft cap. I can go over if the performance increase/options are worth it 😉

Also, I'm looking for a website with some comparisons/definitions (I know HDTV, plasma, LCD, etc., but I'm not familiar with DLP, whether an HDTV tuner is necessary when you have a cable box, etc.) and possibly some reviews. If you know of a good one let me know. (I can probably do most of the work myself with something like that and hot deals.)

get the biggest rptv you can find. i think you can sometimes get toshiba's around 57 inches for about 2000. digital sets still have various probs like black levels. rptvs are definately the best bang for buck and give really great film-like quality. their only problem is possible burn-in issues, but really if you set the contrast correctly that shouldn't be a problem either.

read up on the avs forums first.

I recommand SAMSUNG too!

Samsung makes best TVs so far.

some of my friends got LCD tv and DLP tv from samsung and they love it.

Picture quality was nice. by the way my next tv is gonna be samsung 🙂

some samsung tv has DVI (digital video port?) connector so you can hook up with your computer and use TV as monitor..LOL

i vote for samsung DLP.

i personally have a infocus 4805 DLP projector. though i may get rid of it for a higher res projector

Hmm... seems as if a Samsung DLP is the way to go.

Edit: HLP5063W seems to be the best bet. If you see a lower price than $1929 before shipping, let me know!

Probably looking at ~50", although I'll go where the best deal is. If you find something better that etronics let me know 🙂

can't go wrong with the 50" --- thats what i have after several AT'er recommended it to me and it was a great purchase. If you have any questions on it feel free to ask me.

--make sure you get the HLP, and not the HLN model. the HLP uses the newer 3rd gen DLP processor.

50'' DLP at circuit city -- $2,299 with free in store pickup

--- thats what I got , however it was on sale for $2,150 when i bought it. -- still more than etronics.com even after shipping costs 🙁 (got to pick it up and watch it the same day though, so it was a definite plus)

get the circuit city credit card and get 5% back!

uh, first off....

How far are you sitting from the TV?
Lighting in the room?
Viewing habits (regular TV, DVDs, video games, HD)?

I like the sammy DLPs as well but anything under 60 inches just doesn't do HD any justice.

😕

maybe its just personal preference or viewing habits -- but i think HD looks great even as small as 27". I have a 50"dlp and my parents have a 42 plasma -- and both are so much better than regular tv thier is no comparison. Besides, you need a TON of space to do a 60" tv any justice.

Sitting probably about 10 feet away (just from memory). Most viewing is at night with some back lamp-lighting. Some during the day in a room that gets some light.

Mostly regular TV, some DVDs, we'll be getting HD if we invest in this. I intend to hook up my PC from time to time with the DVI imput and all.

everyone is recommending a DLP or some sort of projection

every projection i've seen has the effect of lighter as you stand up and the image going darker if the viewing angle is lower....doesn't that bother you guys??

one of the reasons that I've havn't gotten a projection yet

meh, with a 42 inch TV you should be sitting like what? 4-5 feet away?

65 inch TV recommended viewing distance for HD is something like 10 feet. There's guidelines out there.

So OP says he's 10 feet away, so he should be looking at 60" plus.

Sony Grand Wega 42" LCD Rear-Projection HDTV

This TV is awesome. The picture is amazing and it has all the extras you'll need. Built in HD tuner, CableCARD, and a great picture even with standard broadcasts. You'll have 2 tuner PIP built in which is very easy to use. This TV will pull in OTA HD broadcasts automatically and HD looks great on it. Don't listen to the guy who says HD sucks at under 60". Sure HD on a 65" DLP looks amazing, but it looks awesome on any size tv. This one costs 2300 but if you can spare the extra change you're looking at a SWEET tv.
