Find me a nice desktop case!

Hey all! I'm going to build a new system soon, and I decided I needed a new case. Well, I'll get you guys decide for me. It must be a desktop case (such as this one), and it cannot contain any plexi or acrylic, for reasons you wouldn't understand. It can cost up to $60, which'll cost me about the same in ?'s. 🙂

Thanks in advance.

Use the Newegg case configurator tool. They have a couple at Directron.com too. Plenty for microATX under $60. - very few for full ATX...

Newegg helps because they carry a wide selection with lots of pix - see it at Newegg, then locate it and buy it where you live. Ditto Directron. I'd save up a little more and look to buy a CoolerMaster Centurion.

Yeah, that's a nice case and all, but that's not what I want. I only have room for a lying (that lies, like you lie in bed, when you sleep in it(English not so good)) case, and it can't have any plexi or such because it leaks radiation from computer parts, which interferes with my other hobby. Transmitting. It causes major disturbances.

Hmm, I quite like it. Can the 60 mm fans be replaced by 80 mm ones, and can the 80 mm one be replaced by a 120 mm one? Also, is the power supply in this thing any good? Would 300W cut it for a 3200+ Venice heavily overclocked?

This is Independence Day weekend here in the States thus not so many hanging around the forums. Your questions could be answered by looking at the pix gallery on Newegg. He helps those who help themselves...
. Most systems (even OCed ones) only use between 200 and 250 Watts. So a solid 300 Watter with the power distributed among the rails favorably for your configuration should do fine. That PSU has 15A on the +12 and 30A on the +5 - unfortunately it is also a non-standard size (narrower) so finding an alternate PSU for it might be difficult. Mounting 80mm fans internally at the back looks like a no-go, but in the instance of 60mm fans such as with the Athenatech A100, you could use a 60-80 adapter and mount the fan on the outside (sucking works much better than blowing with fan adapters 😉 ). It looks like a 90 or 120x25mm could be done instead of the 80mm but you may want to mod the venting on the side of the case to provide a cleaner air path.
. Had you considered the fact that most standard mid-tower cases work just fine laid down on their sides (mobo on the bottom, of course). Most drives (yes, even opticals) have no problem working in the vertical orientation. That would definitely be the cheapest solution to the problem.

Yeah, that is easier, but that's ugly and unhandy. I like to be able to put a DVD in my drive without having to think that I'm gonna have to do it vertically and stuff... Or, are there drives that allow disks to be 'slid in'?

Plextor is about to come out (they claimed mid-June and I don't see it anywhere in the States except for pre-orders - some claim arrival date of July 11??) with a slot-load DVD burner (PX-716AL - $180. MSRP - Plex sure knows how to take advantage of a monopoly. My PX-712A retail cost over $190. when it first came out and was the only one at that speed for a short while - I bought mine at around $70. after rebate) - it may already be out in You-Rope. IAC, there is already a firmware update to 1.01 for the 716AL which is the first thing one will want to do after they buy one.
. But most burners and players have little ears that hold the disk in when the tray goes in and out and they are A LOT cheaper. And once the disk is in, the tray is totally out of the picture anyway as the disk is held and centered by the clamping hub - no big woop.

I was editing and adding to my earlier post while you were posting your last so re-read it.

Another idea - a 3U or 4U rack-mount chassis. I know they are usually quite expensive but can sometimes be found on the used/clearance/ebay markets for low bucks. Those generally take standard ATX PSUs. Not to mention looking cool in a techno-geek sorta way...
. They have a few 4U on Newegg for around US$80. Take a look. Should be reasonable on the used market and may get a PSU thrown in.
