Can I find IP address for known MAC address?
I just got an old Hawking print server - it passes all diagnostics (based on lights), but setup can't find it - I tested both original and the lates setup program from hawking site.

Looks like someone set IP already from default or blocked something.

I did try BOOTP and DHCP, but print server does not respond.
Any way to connect?

Thank you

I'd install Ethereal and start a capture in promiscious mode. Reboot the print server and see if it broadcasts any traffic. If you have a hub to use (better yet, a crossover cable between your PC and the print server) you'll be more likely to see what you need.

If it's really an 'old' print server, it might not even be tcp/ip. The cheaper old ones required netbeui. If you're running XP, you might not be able to see it as XP doesn't install netbeui by default.

Thanks for ideas:
I just did IP scan in the range 192.168.x.x and did not find any.
I will try Ethereal this afternoon.
Server supports TCP/IP, it is not that old, and manual shows this.
I did testing in XP and W2000, I will install netbeui and test again.

So far I found that it's coming with default address 1.2.3.4 and should be listening on the 20540/udp port.

Configuration utility should find it - it does not.
May be it is bad :(

Excellent guess!!!
In fact it does not support TCP/IP, manual was for universal software package, not for this server.

Found PC with Windows 2K, installed NETBeui and it works!!
It also works with IPX/SPX

But I have most of PCs with WinXP.
What will be the best way to use it with XP? Or just sell it and get a TCP/IP type?

Well, from what I remember, the TCP/IP versions of these cost about 1/3 more than the IP ones. It's all according to how bad you need IP print serving. You should be able to find one for fiddy or less, i would think.

If you want to stick w/ the old one, you'll either have to install netbeui on all the XP pcs, or install to one PC, and share the printer from there (in that case, you may as well just hook the printer up directly to one PC and share it, but that's a whole nudder set of issues).

Some would argue that it wouldn't hurt to install NetBeui anyway, as it can actually improve browsing btw networked windows pcs.

I am currently using 2 "newer" hawking print severs on my network, and I was hoping to put the last printer on the network directly without using share.
Share requires to turn on PC with printer attached.

This old one I got for $10 and it is probably worth $10.
I think still can use it if I enable IPX/SPX protocol on all WinXP computers.

Or I may just e@ay it with correct description and get new one for a couple more $.
