Find a computer by its MAC address?

JBT

Lifer
Is it possible to find a computer on my network if all I know about it is it MAC address?

Thanks for any help!!!

you can first narrow it down by searching the vendor code of the mac. this will tell you if its a dell, hp, etc.

then, you can check the arp table of your switches for that mac entry. or, check your dhcp server logs for a lease given out associated with that mac.

I know its a cisco wireless card so I know that much. I'll have to check with our network folks about the ARP table.

since it is wireless you can try excluding that MAC and see if a legitimate user complains. If someone is sneaking on they may be able to spoof to a new MAC if they know what they are doing, so you would have to be on the lookout for a new MAC if that is your concern

someone either misplaced the card or it was stolen. Possibly was given to a client and wasn't recorded etc.

Ok - I see what you are trying to do now. Still may want to exclude the MAC, if it was misplaced and in use that user should start complaining that they cant access the network and if it was stolen, might help prevent it being used on your network
