I own a home, make a decent living and have almost zero debt (other than the home loan).

I invest on my own and re-evaluate my portfolio 4x a year and dollar-cost average the rest of the year. I have a 401k that I contribute to in addition to my other investments.

My question is, my wife and I are thinking about the future (kids, college, etc) and are considering getting a financial planner. I am somewhat against it because I don't see what the value-add is. I currently research my own stocks and enjoy doing it. Things like life insurance, etc don't interest me though so that is one reason I am considering it.

So... does anyone actively use a financial planner and if so do you feel like it is worth it?

People that have too much money hire them usually for tax purposes to shift money around and drop a bracket. Other than that, they come in handy if you don't have the smarts to set a certain amount of money aside for the college fund.

I don't think you sound like you are in need of it. Just try to pay a few thousand to the college fund per year...and maybe sink it into a CD if you have time.
