plan to buy a gaming console in the current or next month and am confused.

i read many heated contests about xbox 360 vs ps3 in man forums and that made me completly confused and resulted in this post.

i know many people out there would be distressed by seeing the similar xbox vs ps3 post but i fell that over the past year many things have changed(price cuts ps3 60gb stopped, etc.) and i would like you to post your decision as to overall which is better the XBOX 260 or Playstation 3.

(P.S :- i live in india and as such the recent price cuts of xbox 360 will not be implemented here).

here, in india both the xbox 360 pro and the playstation 3 retail for roughly the same price.

xbox 360 pro - 628 $ (with 4 free games)

sony playstation 3 - 627 $ (with free GRAN TURISMO 5 PROLOGUE)

also i am not into much online gaming only log in once in a while to play online.

the best genre of games i like is racing followed by action/adventure (like GTA IV) and i dont like FPS too much like to play FPS just once in a while.(Well i loved COD4 on my pc).

hope it helps you in providing better opinion.

Dude, come on. There is a ton of information that can be found from old threads. There shouldn't be much, if any, confusion at all. To get back to your concern, what is so confusing? Also, as you pointed out, a question like this usually does lead to heated arguments with lots of flaming and fanboy-ism. We can help, but regurgitating points that can easily be found only wastes our time. And no, we can't and shouldn't make the decision for you. You have to do it yourself.

To make it short, choose to console which has most of the games you would like to play. Done. Zip. Period.

Agreed. Also, between most games nowadays, they release them for almost all the systems. For software, it'll probably come down to the exclusives you want to play (e.g. Halo for 360 and Final Fantasy 13 for PS3). So no matter what people say about either system, both virtually have the same hits game, like GTA4 that you like. So really the choice is about your own taste of exclusive games. Which is pretty much nycxandy said.

I am a Playstation 3 fan myself. Though I hope this rumor HERE is true. Because if it is....I will finally pick one up.

Just look at the games and see which ones you would prefer to play and choose the system. There are great games for both right now, and more will be coming this year for the PS3.

Although, I am dying to play a few 360 games, but will wait for this new model before purchasing.

What do your friends have in case you want to play on line with them in the future? Also check out the exclusive games for each console and see what you like. I chose the PS3, but that was because I wanted a blu ray player, I play games primary on the PC, though I must admit I've been spending much more time playing on the PS3 lately.

the problem is that none of my friends own a console and i dont know any game that i will surely purchase (except GTA IV that is available on both consoles)

so please i shall be highly grateful if you could advise me on more subjectiev basis such as i have heard that the failure rate of a component in an xbox 360 is ~30%.

also keeping in mind that here in india the price is same for xbox 360 pro and ps3 is same you could advise me.(not unlike in u.s and europe that the xbox pro is much cheaper than the ps3 40gb).

also could you tell me the image difference of the consoles playing the same game, such as which has a genereally smoother gameplay.

basically in a nutshell which is a better investment .(leave games as each has very good exclusives)

thanks in advance

If you can get a 360 with the Falcon chipset the failure rate is reportedly <10%. Since you are in India, I have no clue about what version of the 360 you are currently receiving.

It depends on the game and developer. Ultimately though, the PS3 and 360 are virtually identical in terms of graphics except for pixel counters.

So, which is better in terms of pixel counters.

and does it effect gameplay ?

There are a few other factors I would consider (I probably care more about the controller than most people for instance  ), but in general I think I'm just going to go with this.

For cross-platform games they are now roughly the same, except that Xbox Live on is better for online gaming (but costs $40-50 a year in the US).

360 has the exclusive downloadable content for GTA IV, plus Forza 2 now.

PS3 has blu-ray, better reliability, and Gran Turismo 5 (prologue now, full next year)

Like mugs said, the different controllers are a big deal to some people. I moved from PS2 to PS3 so the PS3 controller seems normal to me.

You should look at the game libraries for each and pick out what games you definitely will buy. If the number is much higher on one of them, buy that one.

PS3 is for you! GT5P for racing and it already has several pretty awesome action/adventure games! check out uncharted, heavenly sword, ratchet and clank, etc...

I don't know what the gaming situation is like in India, but if it's anything like the PAL territories, the PS3's region-free aspect will probably be a godsend for you.

If you're not going online I would say PS3. With that being said, what are the "free" games that come with the 360 purchase?

If you're not going online much, I'd get a PS3 simply due to the 360's overheating problems. Even if the 360 "Falcon" model is hovering at 10% failure rates, that still sucks.

I'm an online guy, so the 360 was a no-brainer... but if I wasn't going online much, I'd get a PS3.

I decided on a PS3 because of the blu-ray player. Is that a factor for you? Do you watch a lot of movies? Are indian movies being released on blu-ray yet? I am very pleased with my purchase simply because it is a fantastic Blu-ray player and dvd player.

The xbox 360 marketplace also has a lot of downloadable video content. But does that vary by region? If not it's worth considering too.

Get A ps3 because:

1. Blu Ray player with upgradeable firmware

2. Slightly Better Graphics

3. Free online play

4. Built in wifi and hard drive and HDMI

5. Home is coming soon

no i dont plan to download videos as such.

and here blu-ray's are extinct .

A blank BD disc can cost you more than 20$ here.

also as told earlier i dont plan to go online , so slowly my mindset is shifting towards ps3.

also with either console,

i hope the quality of the graphics will not look horrible on my 12 year old sony 25" Tv.

I think it boils down to how you feel about current vs future titles. If you want the better selections of games today then the 360 is a nobrainer. If you want future proofed games then the PS3 is a nobrainer. 360 is already hitting its storage limits and they will really have to push hard disk upgrades in the future. RRoD is also a big factor for some people and the GPU die shrink coming shortly will probably knock it down to 3-5% which is acceptable for electronics.

That being said, I got a PS3. Blue Ray player means not only do I have a nice theatre piece but my games will not run out of storage space in a while. The hard disk is totally upgradeable in minutes too on the PS3 with standard notebook hard disks.

Not really. Traditional PAL territories are getting many games first now.

Also, you do NOT want a console that has overheating issues in India. The 360 is overheating in temperate climates. Unless you run it in an A/C'd room every time you'd be risking it.

PS3 is your only option, IMHO.
