Okay, so I went to the dentist today for the first time in five years. According to him, I have several cavities, two wisdom teeth that need to be removed, and I am in need of a root canal. I had some cleaning done today, I understand it was very dirty in there.

Anyway, I don't have dental insurance so the total for all the work is going to come to $2500. It may be a justified price, because I have five years of problems that built up. Should I shop around? I have lots of dentists in my area, but I really don't know if any are "better" than any others. The reason I picked this place is that they had a website :)

Any ideas/suggestions?

Not a bad idea, there can be a huge difference in pricing not to mention questionable procedures from office to office. Make sure you take your x-rays from this visit or you'll run up a large bill in diagnostics alone.

It may be worth paying for dental insurance for just a month or so, just to get some benefits. $2500 is a lot of cash to spend for all that work (I think its a bit high, but I am covered, so I can't say what the real price is). If you were to spend say.. $250 for the beginning of insurance, then cover the rest of year, I'm sure it'll be less than $2500. You'll probably save at least half of that.
