It has been a lonely few months since I sold off my D300s right before Photokina. My passion is shooting events in a photo-journalistic style, and the D300 was almost the perfect camera.

It had speed, resolution, easy-handling, an awesome viewfinder and AF array...I just found myself needing that extra 1-2 stops of ISO performance during the evenings. I have SpeedLights, but my sets ended up being a lot less candid with the SB-800 going off several times a minute.

I think the D700 will finally give me that ability to leave my flash in the bag during indoor/evening events, and grab sets of candids without broadcasting my activities to the entire room.

It'll be here by Tuesday, just in time for my holiday parties. I'll be using it with my 35mm f/2 and 105VR (no standard zooms in my camera bag yet).

You will love it. Sounds like you and I have the same style of shooting. Moving from the 30D to the 5D was huge. I very rarely use a strobe, for the same reasons as you. In fact, tomorrow night I'm going out with just the 5D/35L combo. So sweet.
Everybody says it's not the gear that makes the photograph, it's the photographer. But I can confidently say that the 5D made me a better photographer. Going out with a body and a single fast prime has resulted in some of the best images I've ever created. Have fun with it, don't forget to post pics.
