Finally upgraded from a GTX 460 768MB card!

So i bought Black Ops 2 last weekend and thought it would run better than it does on my GTX 460 768MB card. Turns out i was wrong. I had to reduce most of the settings to make it playable on my system. I knew it was the video card's low ram that was affecting it as i had enabled 16xCSAA and it looked great but too slow.

I just bought the MSI GTX 660 2GB Twin Frozer OC card today and will have it tomorrow. Got it for $229 from Amazon.

Was this a good upgrade? From most of the benchmarks it appears to be twice as fast as a 1GB GTX 460 and mine is only the 768MB version.

Anyone else upgrade from a GTX 460 and can chime in?

The Anandtech Bench suggests you should be getting 50-100% higher framerates on most games, but it still doesn't quite reach 60FPS.

Don't care for the 660's but, better than a 460. Should have just jumped on a used card in the FS/FT forums, you'd of gotten a lot more for your money going 7970/670 or even 7950.

You are most likely right, but i like new cards. And i'm more of a casual gamer and even the GTX 460 was playing BO2 fine but i'd love to max everything out.

I will add that the Radeon 7850, as you may have seen on these forums, is known for getting huge overclocks: 50% is considered average. They're a much better bang for your buck, though overclocking may void your warranty (probably not if you do it using software) and shorten lifespan.

16xAA is what killed you.

I have 768MB 460s in SLI and the only time I'm not at full detail is when I do something like kick AA up, which never happens, as I'm not terribly interested in the blurriness. That, and, with other methods of AA (FXAA or any other post processed AA method that doesn't blur the whole screen), things have never been an issue for me at 1080p since I first bought these cards over 2 years ago

That said, the gtx660 is a clear massive upgrade, and if you absolutely need pure 16xAA, I'm glad you have something that produces smooth gameplay for you.

Well I dunno about 50% (that would be 1290MHz), but indeed some folks hit 1200MHz and mid 1100s (closer to a 33% OC) should be attainable to most.

My bad--I saw people posting memory clocks and read the numbers as core clocks (and the first post suggests they hit ~1300MHz consistently).

Never did understand what a casual gamer is. I'd imagine if you game at all any title could tempt you at some point no? Might as well throw some patience into the mix and direct that overnight shipping fee towards a better card. I do like MSI cards though, enjoy.

a non ti gtx660 for 229 is not that great as there have been ti models for around that price. and 16x AA is silly for high end cards never mind a mid range card...

Not bad and it was the most minimum as far as nvidia was concerned as an upgrade.
I got a 930mhz 460 1gb that I am rocking right now lol.

you must not play many modern games then. plus the rest of your system is probably outdated too if you are still holding on to a card like that.

It replaced my EVGA 8800GTS after very colorful death. Athlon 64 X2 5000+ is not anywhere near modern but it tries to keep up (OCed to the limit!) :thumbsup:
