The only time I'd go with a manual is if it was a performance car.

Have you ever driven a manual before?
A manual is needed most when the car has a weaker 4 cylinder engine to make the most of its power.
And traffic can't be that bad in NC.

Yes, I've driven a manual. And NO it is NOT necessary. I don't speed, I don't show-boat, and I DON'T even have a problem with my 125HP I4 engine in my 4AT '95 Camry LE. I have no problem accelerating, merging or passing other cars. So I don't think that a 4AT Scion tC of less weight and more HP/torque is gonna have a problem.

I'm sorry, but I'm not a speed demon and accelerating like a banshee has never been my "thing." I just have a different outlook on driving. I just drive to get from point A to point B with little to no fuss.

The tC has more hp, but you weren't even close with the "less weight" statement.

tC = 2970 lbs
Camry = 2932 lbs

Yes the tC has better power to weight ratio than the Camry, but are you going to argue that an auto mated to an I4 is better than a manual w/I4?

I've driven the same model Camry and with 4 passengers, their luggage and AC on, it's not exactly quick to merge and pass.

my girlfriend and I test drive this car last friday. Its VERY nice for it's price, and she will most likely get one. Me on the other hand, I'll more than likely get the new 04 Jetta GLI I've been looking at

I don't know how else to say this. WTF is wrong with you people?? I never said that an automatic was better suited for the car. I simply said that I PREFER to drive an automatic for this car, PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

If you have a problem with that, then that's YOUR problem and NOT mine.

Also, I've had my Camry for 4 years and I've driven it in just about every possible situation and I've never once been caught with my pants down when it came to performance. It's always had every ounce of power I needed when I needed it.

As for your weight comparisons:

'95 Toyota Camry LE 4AT -- 3,086 lbs
'03 Scion tC 4AT -- 2,970 lbs

This house is CLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAR

I'm going to have to agree with Brandon here - I myself prefer an auto. Not everyone needs to have a manual to feel like they're in control of the car or to squeeze out an extra .2 in the 1/4, which you probably aren't going to go to that often anyway.

I stopped by a dealership and took a look at the car today.
I didn't bother test driving the car cause they didn't have a manual.

The car looks decent in person but there wasn't any wow factor looking at the car close up.
Looks the same as all the pictures I previously saw on the net.
The 17" wheels, even with 215/45/17 tires, looks like 14" wheels on that car.
One thing that did impress me was how much room there was with the back seat folded down.

There was nothing that would make me want to get rid of my 99 Civic Si.
OK, I lied, the hugh cargo room was a big plus.
The best thing about this car is all the included options for the price.

What I still don't get is in person, the car is about the same size as a RSX/Civic/Mazda 3, etc... but yet it weights close to 3000 lbs.
What were Toyota thinking ??? The whole point of them producing this car is to attract the "performace enthusiats" but at that weight, I don't care how much power you put in that car, it will not peform on the same level as a 2500 lbs car.

Here I wait for the Cobalt and see how it compares.

Who said that it was supposed to compete with a 2,500 lb vehicle?? You people can't have every damn thing. It's based on a European family sedan...they can't work miracles. It's about 130 lbs heavier than a Mazda 3s sedan and sits on a wheelbase 3" longer. Big whoop.

You get all of these features standard, Toyota build quality and reliablility (Mazda is good, but not that good), decent looks, peppy performance and a lower sticker price.

And you didn't even BOTHER to test drive the thing. Sure, the automatic is going to be slower, but you can still get an overall impression of the car before writing it off.

Anyway, Toyota can't please everyone, but the fact that the thing is selling like crazy and there are waiting lists for it means that SOMEONE is diggin' the car.

i bought a Mazda3s recently, also checked out the tC and a few other cars when i was comparing. the tC was nice, but the Mazda3 on the whole seemed to suit me much better, and was just generally more eye-catching. take a look if you haven't already

[edit] on a side note, my Mazda3 is a manual transmission, and IMHO driving manual makes you more attentive behind the wheel and a better, more controlled driver overall. Not to mention, it keeps you from trying to eat a goddamn candy bar, search through a glove box, or talk on a cell while driving, Enough said.

Cutting and pasting from vwv makes you the car guy? Awesome.

Manual transmission is about control over the car.
It's not about performance.

Well, I guess me and the other 80+ % of Americans would rather let the computer handle it;) I honestly don't understand why people have such a problem with someone driving an auto. If it's your car, then fine...

But don't think that you're gonna persuade someone else into thinking that YOUR way is the ONLY way.

LOL, I'd like to see my dad driving his Toyota Highlander or Nissan Frontier Crew Long Bed with a stick. He can drive stick, has owned many stick vehicles, but he prefers auto.

I've owned plenty of autos and manuals. I prefer manual.

I don't try and pursuade anyone to my way of thinking. I can give a sh!t less.

I hear that Scion has no haggle pricing, so you have to pay MSRP?
Or can you get it for invoice?

You dispute the fact that Mr. NSF4 is enthralled with the automobile?

Whether his contribution here involves cutting and pasting doesn't diminish his passion for his avocation.

It's no-haggle, but the no-haggle price can be whatever the dealer sets it at.
Right now I expect most dealerships are charging over MSRP while demand is high and supply is low.

Why would I waste my time when I would never ever buy an auto if manual is an option ?
I just don't like driving an auto and never will.

If you go through the whole thread, I never made a comment dissing you on wanting to buy a tC.
I was adding my own impression since this is the tC thread at the moment.

Hmmm....isn't the main purpose of the tC to to appeal to the modificaion crowd ???
Afterall, they are selling this car way under value hoping to make that up by selling aftermarket parts.
So why would the modification crowd want a 3000lbs car as oppose to a 2500lbs car if they are performance enthusiats ???
This is the main reason why the Civic and Integra were so popular.

So Honda made a hugh mistake in their last generation Honda.
The model restyling change is coming in a year.
They will be bringing back a coupe Si.
So if Honda learned from their mistake and make a coupe Si closer to 2500lbs and increase in HP, which car will the modification crowd go after ??
Mazda is coming out with a Mazda 3 speed pretty soon too.

My point with the weight is that the tC is classified as a subcompact and subcompact is not suppose to weight close to 3000lbs.
One last thing that I've seen few people mentioned is that the not-so-decent gas milage the tC gets.
23/29 is hardly the norm for a subcompact car.
Hell, had Toyota made the Corolla XRS into a coupe I would have been alot more interest in that car than the tC.
The Corolla has the same dimension yet it weight closer to 2500lbs....now why couldn't they do the same with the tC ??
Better yet, take the XRS as comparision.....it weight a good 200+lbs less than the tC but has a little more room.....made from the same company.
It gets 26/34 and no doubt it also faster.

This car is truly a great bang for the buck.

I would not buy a Mazda 3 from my local dealership. They treated me like dirt last time I went it. They didn't even provide me with a test drive I wanted. They said they didn't want to put miles on the new arrivials.

Picked up my Scion TC this morning with 1 mile on the odometer. Flint mica looks fantastic. The driver seat has a pump that raises and lowers the seat. I do not see how anyone has a problem with headroom that is under 6'4.

I have to say that the more "real world" pictures I see of the tC, the less I like the styling. The rear fascia/tail lights in particular look quite generic and (IMO) they could easily be mistaken for a number of other cars. The rear wheels look much smaller than they are in profile view due to the chunky rear 1/4, and the hood's cut line is way too visually intrusive. Darker colors do help a lot.

Not saying it's ugly (it's not - even with my nitpicks I still think it's a nice-looking vehicle overall), or that it's not an exceptional value (it is, and styling is not #1 on my priority list anyway), I just think that I was a little too fired up when I saw the first pics. Must have gotten too excited about a relatively clean design from Toyota. :p

Don't like Toyota, probably never will. The tC styling is anything but. I am sure it's a reliable car, after all it's a Toyota.

About the manual and automatic transmission? I drive an auto now, but I wish to have a manual..I don't mind learning it...like others said, the ability to control the car is what manual appears to me. Not to mention better mileage, and faster acceleration.

Unless automatics become as fast as their manula coutnerpart, I will never buy an auto again. And seriously, automatic trannies should come STOCK with transsmission coolers!!!

Also the tC was SPECIFICALLY designed for the youunger generation, 20 and below. They didn't have 6'10" 35 year old guys in mind.

Yeah the SRT4, Focus, and Accord, (Hell even a decked out civic plays into that price range) are better looking?
