Finally started OCing my 3000+ Winchester

Highest stable that I can get (by stable I mean running all my games and stuff fine: Cs:Source, WoW) is 2.3 GHz at 1.5v. That's 267x9, HTT is 3x

Even moving the voltage up to 1.6, I can't get CS to run for more than a few minutes at 2.4 without getting an error and crashing.

At 1.6v my temps are reaching 51c max, 39c idle with MBM5. Is this an ok temp?

My ram is running at 3-4-4-8 2t at 267 FSB with 2.85v.. which is what it's rated to run at.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here when I try to get to 2.4GHz. I was aware that most 3000+'s can get to 2.5+.

Is raising the vcore higher than 1.6 recommended?

I've thought about it, but this stuff is rated to run at 533Mhz at 3-4-4-8.

this could be the top limit of your ram. Try a 166 divider and see how that does.

also running 2t is a bad/dumb idea.

You will see no difference, you ram will still be plenty fast A64 is not at all memory limited.

ok.. so should I put it back to the pc3200 ratings of 2-2-2-5 and then use the divider?

CPUs are hit or miss. What's the week on your CPU? Apparently, some of the early Winchesters are poor overclockers and won't even pass Prime95 at stock. Also take a look at the alphabetic code after the date... like SPAW or RPMW. R tends to o/c better than S better than T, so R > S > T > U > V > W > X, etc. People with U, V, W, and X chips have had troubles.

well, use 2.5-3-3-7 and you can probably go up to 270htt or higher at 1t command rate.
but with a 3000+ winne, use a divider, I do...

do you know the steppings on your processor? the dates are especially important... 04xx.

FWIW, my winnie does 2.6 stable so far.
I think I can do 2.7, but I may need to remove the IHS...

Don't go higher than 1.6v. It just doesn't pay off with air cooling...

Yes, it's the samsung TCCDs. 270 at those timings? I can't get much to run at 267 with worse timings.

Well it crashed again even with the divider.. guess 2.3 is just the max my cpu can do. Either way I'm ok with that. Thanks for the help everyone.. if yall have anymore ideas I'd be willing to try. Might end up getting a newer 3200 once the prices go down simply because I don't like odd numbers.

Zebo has a great post above about ram settings and the A64...if you want to get the max cpu speed for testing lower the ram

I would suggest to test max cpu...

ram 133 3-3-3-10 2t... or lower ...this is loose but it should take the ram out of the equation...set htt to 3x and start trying faster speeds

I am convinced alot of people are having issues because of ram....eve nthe ram expected to hold tight timings just do not run 1:1 and the perfomance at 1:1 is not significanlty better in almost all things as looser timing if you want the esxtra cpu speed

with that said my 3200 maxes at 2550...no matter what I seem t odo and I ran my ram 100 3-5-5-11- 2t

make sure:
htt 3x
agp 1.6v
ddr voltage at 2.6v or 2.7v
dynamic o/c off
speed spectrum disabled
ati/nv speed up diasbled
cool n quiet off
vcore 1.5 v w/3/3% over vid as a starting point

also on the 6800 make sure fast writesis off in the bios this has caused some issues

if you are using sata make sure you are on 3&4 not 1&2 as these are not bus speed locked...

I am not saying this will be your settings but you need to lower everything and start somewhere

This is key o/cing is always YMMV...I hoped my A64 3200 would easily hit 2600 or more but in Prime 95 it maxes out at 2550 ..I can run faster in winxp but it is not Prime95 stable..I used to never worry about Prime95 but it is nice to know 2550 is like a rock...

I may try 285x9=2565 but I will need to really play with my ram

That is worth ZERO, dont even try it, most people that have done it are very sorry and crying, it does not lower your temps, if you thought
it would, holding the CPU to the socket is a pain, voids your warranty or you cant sell the processor if you decide in future to do so....basically a bad idea...

Lower your cpu overclock altogether, then set your ram to run at its fastest rated speed by using a divisor and run it for a day through memtest-86. If it fails then that *may* be your problem, and if it doesnt then its probably just your cpu's limit or need more vcore.

Well I set the ram at a 133 divider and lowered the timings. It ran CS at 2.4 but it had green lines on the walls and floor.. wasn't very stable.. didn't kick me off though.

With my ram at 1:1 and the cpu at 2.4 GHz.. it looked nice.. just froze on me after 20 minutes...

2.3 GHz at 1:1 with the ram works perfectly though.. guess I'll stick with that.
