The problem is always my internet bill will become nearly what I pay for both internet and TV from the cable company if I don't "bundle" and it ends up not making sense to go through the hassle when it's such a insignificant savings.

Sure I can get a temp say 12 or 6 month deal if I really fight for it to get my internet down to a more reasonable cost but it's always that looming battle coming to try again and it's a hell of a lot harder to get repeat deals when it's only one service like just internet.

I wish the internet prices from the cable company were just standard versus always being some promo cost. Sucks.

Well If he is OTA the "HDhomerun Dual" is the current model. I got one 2 weeks ago when Amazon had the sale.

As for as watching TV on the computer it was childs play. In Ubuntu 12 I use HDhomerun config gui and VLC media player.

I am trying to set up an unused computer with Mythbuntu now. But, my inability to read and follow instructions is causing a delay:(.

yes, HDHR3-US model. works great btw. still haven't got the PVR integration part of XBMC (they are working on it) - but I can start the recording and play the stream to get a pseudo PVR effect. yes, it sucks to lose MNF, but have no option - don't want much except football - so, i guess it is sort of justified. further, can't take directv just for 1 season of sunday ticket. i can write up what I did - or may be refer to steps in the various many sites - if anybody is interested.

I am interested in the OS you are using and the recording software. I just want to set up a PVR for OTA.

I'm interested in getting rid of cable tv. Not at all sure how. Main interest is MSNBC and Current TV. HBO subscription is a nice to have but don't think you can.

here is my post in a different forum on my experience:

to see hardware required see this:

openelec (http://openelec.tv/) is probably your best OS - as it is very minimal (if you don't like windows), and gives you a set-top box effect.

installation is very straightforward. for apple tv 1, currently crystalbuntu is better than openelec in my humble opinion.

after installing crystalbuntu, install hdhomerun drivers and myth tv (will write the steps later).

I am able to record 2 HD channels simultaniously without any issues whatsoever.

the nfl is retarded. every other sport you can buy a subscription to watch online. the fact they cry about piracy is just dumb, because they dont even give you a realistic way to watch. im not paying for an entire cable subscription just to watch games on sunday. that is what they want and i refuse to do it, period.

they should do a flat $5 per game to watch over the internet. or like $200 per season pass to watch all games. they would rake in crazy amounts of cash. but no, they want to be locked to cbs, nbc and fox and those guys still dont understand the internet is just another possible form of revenue.

Do you watch any cable shows on USA, TNT, AMC , etc.?

If you do, how do you supplement your OTA broadcasts? Hulu, Usenet, Torrent, etc.?

Ugh, I thought about getting the HDHomeRun Pro Duo for $70, and then it went on sale for $60. It sold out quickly and now it's up to $90. :\ I just couldn't really justify the cost to provide the only the major networks. It's not like I can "cut the cord" since basic cable + HBO comes for "free" with my apartment. Honestly, I might be better off getting the other HDHomeRun and bothering Comcast to get a cable card.

what a crappy time of year to do that.

If you mean football, sort of. MNF matchups are usually awful anyway. TNF isn't until way later in the season, and it often has terrible matchups also. Losing a lot of college football would be painful, though.

I wish we still had OTA channels here, they recently removed the 3-5 channels we had. Budget cuts, I guess. The tower is right in front of my house (miles away mind you, but it's clear line of sight) so I had decent reception here. Only one channel was snowy. Been debating on getting rid of cable as I hardly watch TV and it would save me like 60-70 bucks a month but at least I'd still have something to put on when I eat or whatever. Meals is about the only time I really watch TV. So not really enough time to load a movie or something.

What I miss is watching OTA TV while camping. There was always creepy alien documentaries of sorts past midnight. Nothing like watching a few hours of that before going to sleep and just let the generator run out of gas. :p We'd always put just enough in for the time we want so nobody has to go outside to turn it off lol.

They do let you watch them online. You have to subscribe to NFL Sunday TIcket MAX which is $300 for the season. It gives you PC/tablet/phone/PS3 streaming all season long. According to this link you can get it without having DirecTV service, but I had trouble figuring out how to do that :)

My setup is a mac mini with plex and a roku box.

I have the roku hooked up to a tv and I can stream via plex, amazon, netflix, hulu, or the dozens of other channels roku has.

My second TV has netflix, amazon, youtube, hulu, plex, and a few others supported out of the box, so I don't have a roku there.

Finally, I use my xbox to rent UFC fights.
