Must be nice to have options, I've been happy with my Verizon DSL but then again I can't be unhappy with it because the alternative is the crappy cable modem service. Nothing else :(

with newsgroups you are good... because there's no uploading involved... if there were... there's potential capping with OOL...

optimumonline rocks. i don't understand why anyone would prefer DSL over it.

jtvang125, about $30/month if you sign up for triple play (cable tv, internet, phone line). that's for the first year only. i don't know how much it costs thereafter.

it cost $49.95/mo. as the normal rate for OOL. That was for their customary 10/1 speeds... which they are now raising to 15/2 for everyone at no extra cost.

I'd vouch for their speeds/uptime if it weren't for their capping practices... I hope they seriously wised up with that crap.

Man, I'm stuck at 3mbps cable, while my neighbors just one mile away have up to 8mbps.

OOL was great in general i had them for the past two years at 10/1 which was a huge improvement over my previous DSL experience. the highest i ever saw from them was a 1375kb/s download, fantastic. however, their upload capping practices are down right retarded. in 2 years time i got capped 3 times for LEGITIMATE use of my uploading to other people (i often work from home). i would get a stellar max of 110kb/s upload but if i USED the bandwidth i was PAYING for for any extended period of time then they would cap me down to 17kb/s and my internet would crawl. i had to call and wait 24 hours or more to get it back to full speed. after the fourth time that i "abused" my internet connection that i am PAYING for (in 2 years time mind you, thats once every 6 months), they suspended my account completely for 7 days time and treated me like some sort of criminal. note that is a MANDATORY suspension for the 4th "abuse." needless to say within 2 days i was switched over to FIOS at 15/2 for basically the same price ($45 - $49 per month), had incredible upload and download speeds, and could be uploading at 240kb/s 24/7 and my internet would still be flying and verizon didnt care (believe me i confirmed with many different people that there was no upload limit or capping with FIOS before i switched). so now im actually getting the bandwidth im PAYING for with no restrictions. FIOS all the way!

WHAT?!! They are raising speeds??!! I never heard about this! Is this for all OOL subscribers?? Only in some places? As for cost ..its $44.95 for me since I also get cable tv from Cablevision.

As for the whole capping stuff.. I guess if you cap yourself (just upload at half the top speed which I think is a bit over 100kb/s right?) to maybe 50kb/s you wont have a problem right? I have never been capped in the 2 years I had OOL. Then again I don't upload at peak hours which is probably the time OOL really starts to look for big uploaders.

It was all about availability for me...they just rolled out in my area.

I'm on the intro plan, $23.90/month for 12 months (plus some free mp3 player)...I was only getting those rates when I went to optimumonline.com using Verizon, at work I was only getting offered the $29.95 intro rate plan...

Newsgroups are expensive though, $15/month :( ... with Verizon it was free. Ahh well...

I read about the free upgrade on dslreports forums for OOL.

As for capping... I wrote my story (in 2 separate posts) in the other thread here. I work from home like ZippyDan mentioned... but they never suspended me... I just got fed up after the 4th time and cancelled.
