Finally Ordered My Sytem

Well, I finally ordered my new PC last night. For those that remember, I've been looking for such a new PC since LAST SUMMER! Back then, it was between an Athlon XP versus one of the newfangled Athlon 64s S754.

They came to about the same price, around 1500 bucks Canadian.

CPU: Athlon 64 3000 S939
Mobo: DFI Lanparty UT
RAM: Samsung 512MB PC3200 x 2
HD: Samsung SATA-II 200 GB
Vid: Sapphire Radeon X800 XL 256 MB PCI-e
Case: Antec SLK-3050 Black
PSU: Enermax 425W ATX 12V Ver 2.0
Mon: Samsung 793DF 17" Flatscreen

Now, the Case somes with a 350W PSU on its own and that should've been fine, but I figured why skimp on the PSU?

Don't know much about OC'ing, but what are the prospects of doing some slight OC'ing here? I ordered an extra 120mm fan built in, and if that's not enough for some minor work I guess I can ask for more.

Whatcha guys think?

Note, I'm not thinking of overclocking this rig right away. In fact, it may be a year or two from now, but I just wanna know what I should start saving for. Say better RAM?

Also, just looking for comments on the users experiences here with the various equipment. Crappy drivers, so-so performance, etc.

Just wanna know what I've gotten myself into.

You can get a decent overclock on the stock heatsink and fan. I've read a few people getting great results. I would probably expect to be able to push that to 2.4-2.5ghz range on stock cooling without any problem.

If I were you, I would probably go ahead and just purchase an XP-90 from jab-tech.com, they have a really good price and you can't go wrong with one of the best heatsinks. Nothing wrong with overkill on cooling.

Good idea getting a different PSU other then the one that comes with your case. Almost all the PSU's that come with cases are crappy and although they can get the job done, its not recommended at all.

If you do get the xp90 grab a 90mm fan and some artic silver. You can expect from jab-tech with a fan and the artic silver and shipping to run in the high 30s in price. Which isn't that bad when you consider what you are getting.

EDIT: Tests have been done on different RAM, and unless your motherboard hates your ram, the performance gain from ram is MINIMAL and not worth buy expensive ram. So your ram should be ok.

Thanks Stokes, I'll check up on that XP 90.

A bigger monitor is gonna be a problem, there's limited space on my desktop and the 17" is big enough as is.

You sure love samsung!
Depending on your room temp, and case cooling, you should be able to do some decent OCing without breaking the bank on a monster HSF. I was able to get the same OCing results on my s754 3000+ with the stock HSF as I got with a new HSF and water cooling, except that the temps dropped quite a bit.

I think you could easily take it up to 2.2GHz with stock cooling.

I think it looks pretty good, the only thing I know I would not get is the monitor, but that can be upgraded later?

Where you ordering from? NCIX?

I was gonna get it from NCIX but that's across the country. Bought it from the helpful people over at www.pccanada.com where I've made most my hardware purchases (in ones and twos) over the years.

What's wrong with the monitor may I ask?

Okay, I blame you guys for this.

I went ahead and upgraded the monitor to a 19incher, the Samsung (surprise) 997MB Silver monitor. I have to trade computer desks to fit it, but at least I can use that X800 XL at say 1600 x 1200...

Get a Seagate HDD. Quiestest out of all of them and a industry leading 5 yr warranty. The new 7200.8 drives are out. :)
