Tried the first shot (2oz) straight, talk about drinking gasoline.

Since I have a limited (read: nonexistant) "bar" at home, all I had was the standard water and sugar, and a separate juice mix-shot.

Buddy and I went 1/2 on 2 bottles shipped from who knows where. Wife went to a late dinner, so I was kicking it, having a Samuel Smiths Nut Brown Ale and found I only had 1 pint, so I opened the cupboards, and there is this green bottle. Rest is history.

Edit: Drinking AbsintheX Zele.

You live in CA? I wasn't aware they ever made it legal again in the states.

In reference to the above thread you referenced, Hemingway's characters tend to drink Pernod.

LOL don't worry, talking furniture require a more powerful brew, involving certain varieties of mushroom.

On a related note, I remember watching some episode of Attack of the Show and they had an absinthe aficionado talking about it. He mentioned about how using sugar or burning sugar with absinthe was never the "real" way to drink it.

He then proceeded to use this old contraption, basically a large reservior full of ice water with multiple taps, to slowly dilute his glass of absinthe just until the whole liquid became cloudy.

That said, I feel bad because my friend had a really old bottle of absinthe (got it from his grandmother that happened to own a bar way back in the day), and he used the ol' spoonful of sugar and flame method to consume it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's all preference as to whether you use sugar, burned sugar, or nothing at all.

Oh well. Maybe one day I'll get a bottle and try it for myself.

EDIT: Wrong on one bit.
Traditionally: Dissolved sugar = good, Burnt sugar = bad.
Doh!

YMMV on absinthe, and modern brews have ridiculously low amounts of wormwood, which causes the hallucinations because they (long story short) inhibit GABA inhibitory neurons which causes more of your neurons to fire than normal... hence the frequent use of it for writing/inspiration/arts. "liquid muse".

however the alcohol content is still pretty high, well over 40%, I think they're between 50-60, when I tried it getting trashed occurred before any hallucinations could really take place.

Well, starting my 4th drink now. Tiredness went away, just neffing away now.

Edit: And why the fsck don't people leave feedback (Heatware) on transactions?!?! Really pisses me off.

AsianriceX - The correct way to drink it is to put a sugar cube on a spoon and then pour the Absinthe over it into a glass.

farfig is correct, the modern brews have very low wormwood content. I heard some the stuff from Czech Rep. is still the real deal.

Also heard you can go "crazy" "mad, "etc" from drinking it over long periods of time. (6+ months)

Well, no craziness w/ this first experience... I'll be sharing the bottle soon, so we'll see what happens.

Absinthe is traditionally had with water, the cloudyness is desirable; it's called the louche. Sugar is only supposed to be added with an absinthe spoon. I've seen a couple videos of people who let burning sugar drop into their absinthe, the result was pretty damn funny.

Blech. I had some Sebor absinthe and the stuff was complete crap - nothing like advertised and nowhere near as good as the Emile 68, a French version I tried.

Put some on a table spoon (or shot glass) light it on fire and drink it. That's the correct way to do it.

No, for Christ's sake, it's not. Just because they do it that way in the movies doesn't make it "right." It's one way to do it. But if you meant it's the original method, you'd be wrong.

To tell you the truth those are most likely myths. Also not many in the Czech Republic drink this, it's not very popular. Grab a 6 pack of Pilsner Urquell next time and you'll be thanking me for the advice.

Lol...the way in movies? We've been doing it this way for a while now...

Edit: It's the popular method in the Czech Republic...My Slovak friend actually does it the same way...what's your's just straight up taking shots of it?
