LOL hmmmm if you don't believe in religion can you tell someone or something to go to hell? Hell and heaven only exist if you are a religious person. So by telling someone to go to hell it is an affirmation that you believe in such a place and thus believe in religion. ;)

ironic yes...

You can talk about Santa Claus without actually holding the belief that he will be down your chimney on Christmas Eve. You can talk about Valhalla without an actual expectation that we will go and wait for Ragnaraok.

You can tell me what to plan to do on Thursday, without believing in Thor.

moronic indeed.

After 25 years.. I finally give up. Already feels like a huge burden has been lifted from my shoulder. I just spoke with my GF, who is extremely religious BTW, about this and she seems to take it better than I initially thought. I also told her that she is free to follow her faith and she complied.

That said; I still don't think Hinduism is bad.. just like the constitution of India. My biggest gripe is the caste system..it is just not relevant in this day and age. I will be waiting, in hope, for that day to come.

People of no faith - UNTIE!!!

Be prepared for the GF to leave your heathen ass. By rejecting religion, you are rejecting her core beliefs...She MAY tell you now that it doesn't bother her...but it will...and unless she rejects religion as well...this will drive a wedge between you.
You're doomed.

Have you seen a Japanese movie titled Jigoku or "The Sinners of hell" ?

In that movie the director tries to depict Buddhist's version of hell. So.. ,tell me SamQuint, for me to enjoy that movie(which I did immensely), I have to understand that there is a place called hell according to the director, but do I have to believe in hell to truly appreciate that movie?

I was talking about people that tell others to "go to hell" If hell does not exist to them then "go to hel"l is basically a meaningless phrase. You use the word hell because you believe that a hell is a really bad place to be. I think it is funny when I hear athiests use the terms "go to hell" "Oh my God" or "Jesus Christ". By the way the winking emoticon there was there to mean I wasn't serious. lighten up people.

Now that you have opened your mind to the inconsistancies of the organized mythos to which you were born, please feel free to continue the logical deductions that lead you to that discision. It serves no purpose to simply reject one premise without exploring other possibilities. I will say that on these forums you will find a myriad of religious beliefs. Several stereotypes exist. The angry atheist - often grew up being force fed some organized religion, now rejects all metaphysical thought. The devout believer - cannot escape the rhetoric, speaks in terms that have no mutually accepted definition. The ignorant agnostic - doesnt want to think about it but accepts that neither argument is solid. The retrospective - who clings to ancient thoughts. The alternative - who links to anything unconventional.
I suggest that you simply think about it. Make up your own mind but keep it open. You have already contemplated the nature of penance and punishment. I suggest that you start with trying to define good and evil and try to decide if these concepts are concrete or relative, universal or meaningfull only in the context of human action. Don't start off with the existance of a creator god, or the existance of souls (are living things the physical encapsulation of some noncorporial sentience), there exists to date no deductive or logical argument for or against the possible existence of these that has come anywhere close to convincing.
As one of my devout friends stated "these things make my head hurt". But you are free to believe what you want, or more accurately think what you want and believe what you think.

You understand that when someone says "fuck you" they don't actually mean they really like you don't you?

My GF and I have been together for 8 years now.. and when I told her about this.. she responded by saying "Its about time."

She knows that I grew up in a family that was not religious to start with.. and I am worried that I will initiate any confrontation rather than her... as I am more argumentative when compared.

I once told her that I rate video games higher than religion in my life... and based on past experiences if anything.. I should be the one to drive a wedge between us. So far.. it has worked out pretty well between us and we never had to lose sleep over it.

Rejecting religion is like rejecting magical unicorns and fairies; it doesn't take courage, it simply takes a moment of critical thinking.

interested question- You say you were hindu? Was your sect one that believes in a god or gods, or one that believes in souls which reincarnate without a creator god figure? Some of the pantheistic and panentheistic sects are quite interesting. I agree that the manipulation of the karma concept to justify treating other people badly is just another example of exploitation of a religious belief to gain advantage by selfish people.
Please expound on your thoughts, you touch so briefly on them earlier.

That's not totally true depending on where that person lives. Religion is so deeply ingrained into a lot of communities that coming out as a "non-believer" can cause all sorts of problems - family, friends, school, work, etc. People are ostracized, sent to "re-education" facilities, fired, disowned, and so on.
