Ugh.. I decided to jump on the PCI-E bandwagon because I just got a great deal on the ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe NF4. HotDeals forum is making me go broke =(

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to Quake 4.. (played it at QuakeCon, felt like a solid deathmatch game..)

I'm so tempted to go ahead and get the 7800GT (NewEgg Albatron $320ish after rebate)

I really don't need it yet but it's hard to resist when getting a new motherboard I won't be able to use for a few weeks! :( :(

You think the price on high end video cards will drop even more when ATi releases the R520?

My budget is around $350 for the video card.

Also, my processor SHOULDN'T be bottlenecked by a 7800GT correct?

My current system specs

AMD 64 3200 @ 2.5 ghz
Dell 2405fpw (1920x1200 native)
BFG 6800NU
K8N Neo2

You might get bottlenecked a bit at 1920x1200 especially if you use AA/AF, but it depends on the game, some games are GPU limited more anyway, and some are more CPU limited.

More than a likely a G70 variant but it probably pays to wait and see.

If you had to buy now, no doubt the Geforce 7000 series is the way to go.

ATis new shader monster might be worth waiting for though.

It may be, but I seriously doubt ATI is going to reverse it's eternal "worse at OpenGL" position by releasing a new card. Could happen, but doubt it.

I also seriously doubt you will buy an ATI card for $350 that beats a 7800GT on a Doom3 based game anytime soon.

Last, even though my X800XT PE put up similar benchmark numbers at Doom3 as the 6800GT, the 6800GT felt smoother doing it. Don't know why this is, I think nVidia just writes better OpenGL drivers than ATI, whatever the reason.

So my answer is buy a 7800GT if your budget is final, or better yet a GTX.

Im still banking on the card being great at shader ops (if the 16/16 rumor is true). Doom 3, even though its openGL is very shader heavy, and could (potentially) benefit tremendously from the additional shader power.

I completely agree on the $350 mark, the 7800GT is going to be king for a while.

I also concur, I am loving my 7800GT :)

The 7800gt is a good choice - it's $100 less than a gtx, and when OC'd it can match the gtx in a lot of benches. But I still think it you should wait a few weeks and see how the new Ati cards compare, so you'll make an informed buying decision.

IMO, if you already have an SLI capable motherboard, you should go with either a 7800GT or GTX. That leaves you an obvious upgrade option in future.
