Windows 8 is fine with Start8 installed, but a PITA without it. I'd go 8 with Start8 personally, or at least Classic Shell (free) if you can't afford the $4.99 price tag.

Also, if you go Windows 8, there is no Media Player any longer, so make sure you install VLC Player which will give you full DVD and media playback functionality. :)

I felt like that in beta of Win8,but on the retail version I got use to Win+X menu, added Reboot,Shut Down and a few other programs, now I find I don't miss the old Win95 to Win7 start button, that was almost 20 years of assimilation ,scarey lol...

I bought a laptop several years ago when Vista had just come out. Even though I was nervous because of all the reports that Vista sucked, I decided to go with it instead of XP for many of the same reasons people here are saying to go with Win 8 -- it was newer, supposedly had better security, and I wanted to stay "current" with my OS.

I've regretted it ever since.

If you got a Vista system before SP1 then yes there were some innate problems besides the drivers.

You also have to take into account that when Vista had just come out some PC component makers were ignoring what MS told them about having to learn a new way of writing drivers because of the new changes meant to help security. Which meant unstable drivers on top of the gold release problems.

Obviously not,btw you can download Win8 compatibility checker here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...e-to-windows-8 ,I only had one program that I had to uninstall, actually it was two(Anti-virus as well).

Sometimes the update checker doesn't give you a firm answer on a particular piece of software. Which was why the suggestion about searching forums for answers about less popular software and a new operating system was made.
