Finally Made up my mind and ordered the parts, any predictions?

AMD Athlon T-bred B XP 2100 from new egg
Epox 8RDA+ from new egg
256MB Corsair XMS3200 2-2-2-6 @ 200mhz tested
SLK-800 + Tornado 80mm fan (84CFM)
Steel Case with window, etc 7 fans
some CC lights and rounded cables
---parts im using that i already had---
Using an old Maxtor 40gb 7200 RPM HDD
GeForce GTS 32MB DDR
Enermax 350w PS

All in all it cost me around 530 using the ps which i already had and the hard drive which i already had

Any guess on what it will overclock to with this setup(M x FSB)? Not asking for a professional opinion or anything =) just curious. I will probably start it at 166mhz and see how high I can get it stable, with stock voltages.

Also, what is the max voltage recommended for these chips for long term running. 1.8?

Lastly, does anyone see any weak spots? I know I could go raid but I might do that later (Had a raid setup before and was happy with it)

Possible upgrades once I get a few more bucks:
Gaindward GeForce 4 TI 4200 Golden sample 145
another 256MB of RAM 105
2-8MB cache 7200 RPM HD's and raid card 250-400
DVD-RAM 200-300

thanks

You can never really tell how high you can OC until you have it running

I would stay away from a DVD-RAM drive though... (DVD-R and DVD+R are the formats to use)

should be able to get around 2300mhz without to much work if you get a decent cpu.

i topped out at 2360 on my system, with basically the same setup, using a ys tech fan instead of that tornado. could get more out of it im sure, but would require me to mess around with the voltage mod,and cool the northbridge on the 8rda+. running comfortably at 11x200 so i really see no need.

yeah, I know its all subjective but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Are the more recent chips not hitting quite as high as the week 48 etc? or are they all a decent spread

I have a similar setup just about ready to play with. My newegg 2100+ is AXDA2100UTC3, AIUB0302RPFW (arrived yesterday). What stepping did you get? I have read that the 0302 is overclocking quite well, although the n isn't yet as large as the sample of overclocked 48/49 chips out there. Now my biggest problem is waiting for the case to arrive. Argh! It was my first order, but UPS is taking all 6 working days (doesn't include shipping day) for the shipping with 2 sandwiched weekends for a grand total of 11 days. Everything else is here and ready to go. Oh well, gives me more time to research overclocking, noob that I am. After I get my computer up and running at defaults, any tips on initial configurations to start with?

ThbredB 2100+ 0302
EPoX 8RDA+
2x256 Corsair XMS3200 C2
SLK-800 w/ YS-Tech variable speed fan (any ideas where/how to mount the control?)
WD 80GB SE
Liteon 482448 CDRW
Saphire ATI Radeon 8500LE 128 (not sure this was my best choice, but it was in my price range)
Lian-Li PC65Plus (6 case fans)
Do I need a floppy drive for bios updates or are there other options like a bootable CD?
I have heard people are actively cooling the NB and moffsets (or whatever they are called) -- good idea? Vantec Iceberq?

I am not good at waiting. And, dang, this BIY stuff is addictive. I'm having a blast so far. Between this and skiing/mountaineering gear, my truck had better hang in there -- no money for repairs right now. :D

cowdog, the OCed CPU in my sig is a 0302. I think you'll be happy if you recieved the same results I have.

/cough, hope i get similar results to that =)

we will have to compare results cow, since we are doing this at approximiately the same time with somewhat identical setups

Yeah, that comparision will be interesting, although I plan to take this a bit slowly as I gain a feel this OC stuff. The wife will not be happy if this investment takes a turn for the worse. Now if only UPS would surprise me and deliver that case tomorrow. I can't wait to get off this PII-333, although it isn't as slow relative to my campus office P4-1.6 as I would expect.

And whoa, that's an impressive overclock! I think I could live with something similar.

Shhh! Dont say that too loudly or some of the chip makers will come and "silence" you. For basic uses (internet emailing and word processing) most 100+ mhz computers do fine =) Its just the advanced programs like 3d rendering and the new games are out that you notice a big performance difference in =)

Its always good to take it slow and document what you do. I plan on running a few basic overview benchmarks (pc mark 3dmark etc) of the "before" and "After" system just to present an overall performance increased gained by the extra work put into it, as well as to compare the price of a similarly performing system to that of what I built.
