Finally made the switch to LCD!!!

Hey guys,
I noticed there is a big thread going on about the Samsung 710N, but I picked up the 712N locally tonite and it's perfect! I got it at Circuit City for $459 with a $50 MIR and a coupon for a giftcard worth 10% of my total purchase so the deal was pretty nice after all. I am running it with my 9800 AIW PRO, and all I can say is WOW. At 1280x1024 @70hz this things simply rocks. I couldn't get the driver cd to work properly in WinXP so I hopped on the net and pulled the latest driver off Samsung's website and installed in a snap. Text was very blurry at first and some letters seemed to be bolded almost like ThIS. I used the auto adjust button and it fixed the problem right away. I haven't had much chance for gaming, but I did play a few minutes of Doom 3 and the difference between my old ViewSonice CRT is like night and day. There isn't much of a big price/performance with this monitor vs the 710N at NewEgg, so if you don't waiting for a MIR, I would try one out locally. The ability to return it if there is a pixel problem is what finally made my mind up for me.

I feel the same way about my Sharp LCD vs. my CRT.

There's a huge difference.

Oh, & btw, using Cleartype helps alot for reading text.

That page will not work in Firefox sadly, fyi (gotta use IE to turn on Cleartype).

Funny i just posted this. I've been thinking about "the switch" as well.
What model Viewsonic were you using? I'm curious about how your experience with Doom3 goes as well.

I am using clear type. The funny is that I tried out large fonts at first and enabled Cleartype. Everything looked great, but I wanted to see what the major difference between normal and large fonts would be, so I switched back to normal. The text was very blurry even with Cleartype on, so I tried turning it off then back on. It didn't help so I hit the auto adjust and everything was beautiful once again.

So ClearType doesn't work in Firefox?

It works with Firefox AFAIK, but you cannot change the Cleartype settings, or enable it (i can't, anyway).

My LCD gets blurry text when I set the refresh to 70hz. I leave it at 60hz, and everything is sharp as a fine Swiss knife.
