P5B Deluxe
Corsair 2x1GB, 6400C4
Lian Li 7B II Plus
Seagate 7200.10 320GB
Core 2 Duo E6400
All-In-Wonder X1900
Seasonic S430

I'm not a big gamer but I am hooked on having TV on the monitor. I basically only play COD2 now and then. I wanted the P5B Deluxe for the TI firewire chipset (vs VIA for "E" ) and passive cooling.

I still haven't ordered a CPU cooler...? Not sure which way to go there.

I'm not looking for a monster overclock. If I get 3GHz I'd be really happy.

have you considered DS3 over P5B?

overclocking 2.13Ghz to 3GHz? that is monster overclock in my book lol

Yeah, I did consider it but the edge went to Asus for the TI based firewire chipset. I know it's a small detail but enough for me to give Asus a shot. I've never had an Asus board before.

Seems like most people are getting at least 3GHz out of the E6400...

If you don't plan on overclocking, the stock cooler is more than adaquete. I have the same case, and it is awesome. None of the stupid "tool-less" crap.

In a rush of impulsive keystrokes I ordered the Big Typhoon.

I'll report back in a few days after the build...

Sounds like something I would do. We wait with baited breath (not really, but hit us back anyway).

not for a C2D. 3ghz is conservative. :)

That's what I thought.

From what I've read putting on the Typhoon is a real bear. We'll see...

Okay, I finally got all the parts in and the system built.

First of all getting the Big Typhoon was easy. They have updated those little nuts the reviewers were complaining about with good sized thumb screws. It was easy to put on.

So I fired it up and everything was good to go.

I was too lazy to mess with the overclocking too much so I set the RAM to 800, FSB to 400, and CPU voltage to 1.35 to see what would happen.

No problem! Booted right up at 3.2GHz. I've been running Super Pi and some pretty heavy duty video rendering and so far so good.

I do have a few questions.

What does the DRAM frequency do? I set it at 800 since I wanted to run 3200, or 8x400, but I'm not sure what setting that to 800 actually does? Does that keep the memory and FSB at 1:1 ratio?

I guess I got lucky as I didn't even change the memory timings and cpuz is reporting 4:4:4:12. Which is fine by me since that's what I paid for. I did manually set the voltage on the memory to 2.1 since that what the spec is for this stuff.

Finally, what program do I need to check out the cpu temp?

Thanks for all the advice and help!

Didn't even need to touch the vDIMM?? Wow.......

Speedfan and CoreTemp to monitor temps and volts. Make sure you're running dual instances of Prime95.....let it run for a few hours and watch your temps.....if they're good then let it run overnight and then you should be rock solid.
