My trusty ~8 year old $50 Samsung ML-1740 Laser printer is finally having some printing issues - vertical faint lines, and it sometimes grabs 2 or 3 pages at once. I've ordered a new toner cartridge for about $17, so we'll see if that takes care of the light printing & vertical light lines issue for the short term. Even if it does, I took a good look at the rubber rollers and such, and the rubber has become a bit cracked with age. I've been very happy with the laser printer, especially compared to my old dot matrix and a couple of inkjets that I tried. However, I think it may finally be time to entertain getting a new one. (especially since my wife said "We need to get a new one!" last week!)
Does anybody make laser printers with inexpensive toner - especially without all of the chipped things that try to make you buy the expensive, name brand toner cartridges? That has been the main issue keeping me from "upgrading" to a new printer. I've heard through the grapevine that most everything has chipped "copy protection" that tries to force you to buy name brand toner cartridges for ~$80, instead of the remanufactured ones for ~$25 or less like I'm used to. I absolutely HATE that - it's like having someone follow you around and keep you from buying things used at yard sales, and forcing you to always buy new at retail instead.
I've even seen some color laser printers for sale under $120, but I'm turned off by the very high cost of replacing the color toner. ($180 on some models)
Have any of you bought a laser printer in the past year or so that you're really happy with? I know the topic isn't exactly the most exciting or cutting edge, but I'd like to hear from some "happy campers" who have been impressed with the price and quality of their printer. Thanks!
