I've been talking about buying one for months.

Here are the factors behind it.
1. Going to London for 3 month internship starting in May
2. Have had definite times when I've needed it the last few months. 1. Makes it easier to gripe about this one.

What I wanted.
1. DVD
2.Screen Res more than 1024*768
3. Good video.
4. International Warranty

What was limiting me.
1. $$$. I'm trying to save all the money I can for the trip, so I had to use....
2. Credit. I butchered my credit a few years back and can only get credit at Best Buy.

What I was looking at:
Dell 8100, Toshiba S507, IBM A22

What I got for 2200 total (taxes and warranty):
Compaq 2700T
P3M 1.0 Ghz
512 ram
15 inch SXGA screen
20 gig HD
32 meg ATI card
DVD (ultrabay)
CDRW (ultrabay)
Integrated Modem, Nic, USB, Firewire
Extra battery (ultrabay version, not regular)
3 year international warranty

Why I bought it.
I could have saved cash for one of the preferred models but then I wouldn't have that cash for london. I went to best buy to see if I could live with a screen with just 1024 resolution. The guy tells me that I can custom build a compaq or hp and still pay w/ best buy credit. I knew I didn't want the HPs because they use shared ram.

The machine came w/ free shipping, 100 off the burner, free ultrabay batter (190 bucks), super warranty. There's also a 100 dollar rebate on best buy's site for it.

It actually came out cheaper than it would have if I ordered it from compaq. Do I still wish that I could have afforded one of the nicer models? Yes. Will this laptop do? Yes.

Thx for all the help. Everyone's laptop threads have helped.

nice, i'll be in the same situation soon when i go over seas for about a year...no way i can live without a computer that long...

i love the super slim-line models, but they're too pricey for me - not to mention the fact that i probably won't be moving it around a lot, so it doesn't really matter how thick it is...might as well save some money...

will probably end up getting a 1.2ghz athlon 4 - battery consumption hog?...so what...i'll mostly have it hooked ot an outlet anyway.

the 8100s look decent too...
