I didn't drink anything carbonated the first 21 years of my life
Are you implying that you never had any soda till you were 21???

Yep. I still haven't had any straight up. Only time I've had a large quantity of it I've been drinking something like a rum and coke.

Did your parents hate you?

I don't know why they didn't feed it to me when I was a child. Really it was a pain in the ass sometimes, especially before bottled water became popular. I'd go to a ballgame and there would be nothing at all non-carbonated to drink.

Glad you liked the Guinness; it's my favorite beer. Actually, the only beer I really like. Gotta agree with you on the smoothness. It's delicious.

Are there any microbrewries around town that you can try. In Ann Arbor, there are a couple that make decent beer. My favorite is Arbor Brewing Company, its hard to walk out of that place sober and I don't drink to get drunk.

Next time you are out try Bass on tap. It is alot better. I can't stand it out of the bottle.

I did try it on tap. The only beer of the three that was a bottle was the pilsner Urquell

A few of you might remember my post asking for first beer recommendations. I finally finished my first beer a few minutes ago. It was a Newcastle English Ale, from a 1 pint bottle I found at a local liqour store.

Aroma was a sweet, malty fragrance, with a weird sharp odour that I can only imagine is from the hops (correct me if I'm wrong)

taste was fairly rich, with an sweet opening, a deep, almost chocolatey middle, and a finish that was kind of honeylike almost, especially if I kept the beer in my mouth for a while before swallowing. At the end, there was a slight, kind of pleasent bitterness at the roof of my mouth (again, I'm guessing from the hops). Overall decent, but I have no other beers to base it to.

Lemme know what you think. Am I totally off base, or is this somewhat accurate? Any other recommendations?

Looking forward to opening up a Spaten Optimator tommorow night.....

EDIT: I went to downtown austin, and had 4 beers last night with a friends, in the order listed before

1. Bass Ale: Meh, nothing special in my opinion. Tasted like a watered down version of the Newcastle, IMO, with slighly more bitterness.

2. Guinness: I was expecting a lot going into this, and it met my expectations. Unbelievably creamy texture - I can't imagine a smoother liquid. Not very complex, imo, a choclatey flavour, but the smoothness was definately the highlight. Nary a hint of bitterness in the finish. Definately the highlight of the night.

3. Pilsner Urquell: Nice, crisp and refreshing. Nice sharp opening, kind of fruity(pear/grapefruit), and a bitter hop ending, which was nice. Kind of reminded me of a riesling wine. Definately can see myself dowing this on hot summer day, but dunno if I'd drink this other than that.

4. Paulaner Oktoberfest: Don't remember anything remarkable about it. Had a nice body, and very drinkable, with a very slight hint of bitterness at the end.

Comments.....

Give it a few years and you'll see that the best tasting beer is the one that somebody else buys.

beer.. you never own it, you just rent it.
