Finally had my first beer

A few of you might remember my post asking for first beer recommendations. I finally finished my first beer a few minutes ago. It was a Newcastle English Ale, from a 1 pint bottle I found at a local liqour store.

Aroma was a sweet, malty fragrance, with a weird sharp odour that I can only imagine is from the hops (correct me if I'm wrong)

taste was fairly rich, with an sweet opening, a deep, almost chocolatey middle, and a finish that was kind of honeylike almost, especially if I kept the beer in my mouth for a while before swallowing. At the end, there was a slight, kind of pleasent bitterness at the roof of my mouth (again, I'm guessing from the hops). Overall decent, but I have no other beers to base it to.

Lemme know what you think. Am I totally off base, or is this somewhat accurate? Any other recommendations?

Looking forward to opening up a Spaten Optimator tommorow night.....

EDIT: I went to downtown austin, and had 4 beers last night with a friends, in the order listed before

1. Bass Ale: Meh, nothing special in my opinion. Tasted like a watered down version of the Newcastle, IMO, with slighly more bitterness.

2. Guinness: I was expecting a lot going into this, and it met my expectations. Unbelievably creamy texture - I can't imagine a smoother liquid. Not very complex, imo, a choclatey flavour, but the smoothness was definately the highlight. Nary a hint of bitterness in the finish. Definately the highlight of the night.

3. Pilsner Urquell: Nice, crisp and refreshing. Nice sharp opening, kind of fruity(pear/grapefruit), and a bitter hop ending, which was nice. Kind of reminded me of a riesling wine. Definately can see myself dowing this on hot summer day, but dunno if I'd drink this other than that.

4. Paulaner Oktoberfest: Don't remember anything remarkable about it. Had a nice body, and very drinkable, with a very slight hint of bitterness at the end.

Comments.....

damn, you started with a newcastle? that's like de-virginizing yourself with a supermodel.

For some reason, any booz/alcohol/wine is distasteful to me. Just give me some frickin chocolate milk already! :|

Hehe, it was a part of my boss's list of beers I have to try. When he heard that I'd never tried beer, he made it mandatory for me to atleast try two a week from a list he gave me, and give him status updates on them every week. He spent like an hour with another friend making up this list to get an idea about how different styles work. If anyone's interested, I can put it up, and people can critque it/use it/whatever.

lol, I'm really into high end chocolate, and have drunk some wine, so I have some idea of how to look for flavours, maybe? 😉

Still no comments on the beer ....

it was a fine choice . if you check out the other beer threads, you'll see it's highly recommended around these parts.

is chimay on the list? i prefer the red ale over the grande reserve

I had a more crazy start to beer drinking. I didn't drink anything carbonated the first 21 years of my life (just a coincidence it was 21, I don't care about underage drinking). When you aren't used to it, drinking carbonated stuff hurts like a bitch. I bought myself a 6-pack of Sam Adams and drank it over a few days. The first couple were awful, but by the end of the 6-pack I could drink it ok.

And I'd like that list you have. I still have no clue for the most part of what different styles taste like and what food they go with.

Not quite. Newcastle is actually pretty "mild" (but you know that already), and a good choice for a new beer drinker.

Are you implying that you never had any soda till you were 21???

And I'd like that list you have. I still have no clue for the most part of what different styles taste like and what food they go with.

I've posted the list in my previous post. Sorry, no food pairings. Hope it helps

ATOT is going down hill. Seriously, a thread that basically says "I drank a beer." Whoopdeedoo.
i'm guessing you like the bitter beers?

besides, it's a decent thread. first time experience; gave a decent analysis, provided list of future things he'll try, asked for and received opinions. it was a lot more than just "i hd ber and n0w im drunk ad tiping wit intenshunal speeling mistacks to pruv it."

My first legal beer was a guinness in london. Fresh from the tap in a pub, that was one of the most delicious beers ever. Nothing tastes better than freedom

Newcastle is a good way to start. Most new beer drinkers have trouble with the hop taste, but Newcastle is one of the most mildly hopped beers around.

to be nit-picky, Stella is a Belgian beer, not American.

...and I wouldn't recommend Sierra's IPA. Their pale ale is fantastic, but I (and many others on beeradvocate) fine the IPA lacking. If you're on the west coast, try Stone IPA. If you're on the east coast, check out Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, Clipper City Loose Cannon, or Harpoon IPA.

Not sure on availability as I've never looked for it in the states, but try Krombacher it's some really nice stuff. Stella Artois is very good as well.

Dude.... you're thinking about it entirely too much.

Time to try wheat beers now (especially since its summer!) A good hefeweizen sure hits the spot on a hot summer day.
