Finally grabbing a new smartphone

I'm planning on finally switching from AT&T to T-mobile, and can probably get a new smartphone. Any suggestions on which one to get?

T-Mobile actually has the best coverage where I live most of the year, although in parts of jersey it completely disappears. I'm not dead set on T-mobile, but verizon is generally a bit more expensive, and it's not like they are that much faster, although their service is decent. Sprint, maybe.

Anyway, I'd primarily use my phone to listen to music, and surf the web. Business use would be rare.

The G2 seems decent with a physical keyboard and android, but the processor is a bit slower, and I'm not sure how it will hold up over two more years. MyTouch 4g looks ugly, and I don't even get 4g in my area so far as I know. The entire class of Galaxy S phones look ugly too, although if the performance is that good I'll consider it.

Any thoughts on the upcoming palm pre 2? I've really wanted to try WebOS, but it seems to be cdma only.

At the same time, I see a bunch of new stuff coming out perhaps Q1 2011 so I'm not sure if I should wait for a better phone because I keep my phone for a while; I'm still on my 1st gen iphone.

g2 is a great phone. The cpu is "only" 800mhz, but it's a newer gen snapdragon and includes a faster GPU than phones like the evo and nexus one. It is also stupidly fast if overclocked, if you're into that.

LOL, you just negated Tmobile 3 best phones(minus the HD7).
BTW, the G2 is not slow.

Looking up the G2's cpu, I'll retract that comment. It's definitely not slow.

I'm honestly just not attracted to a black glossy plastic casing.

Think I'm leaning toward the G2 then as it is unless there is something that much better.

I'm big on WP7 these days so I'd recommend the HD7 or Dell Venue Pro if you want T-Mobile. I'm loving my Samsung Focus so far.

Outside of those, I would recommend the G2.

What's so great about WP7? The main features seem to be active tiles and hubs. That's alright, but it's nothing too exciting. I actually dislike the layout where pages stretch across screens. In the promo images you often see letters being cut off. I'm sure it's a conscious design choice because it does fit in relatively well, but it bothers me.

I must also ask how well the G2 plays media and music? I've read android isn't great at it, but being a decent media player is important. Nothing too much, but perhaps I'll load it with some videos and music whenever I take a bus trip, which is actually quite often.

While I would also like to play games, and feel that that's probably an area in which microsoft will have the upper hand soon, I could really do without the xbox live integration seeing as how I don't own one. I do own a ps3 and pc though heh.

You noted in your question about the G2 one of WP7's strengths - the media player is fantastic. It has full Zune integration if you're into that sort of thing, but even if not, the player itself is very good.

Other strengths of WP7 - very smooth/easy to use UI, great integration with Office/Exchange, very very good on screen keyboard, Xbox integration. I personally don't play games on my phone, but from what I've seen, I really think that WP7 will take the gaming crown from the iPhone (in terms of quality, not quantity obviously).

Anyway, the G2 (and most Android phones) will play music, but the built in media player is pretty meh. There's replacements on the Android Market, but they're pretty meh too. Frankly the only thing I ever used with my plethora of Android phones was Pandora, because I just didn't really like the built in players.

I just bought an HD7 (have a Nexus One as well). If I wanted to get another Android phone on T-Mobile, I'd have a hard time choosing between the G2, Galaxy S, or myTouch 4g. The screen on the Galaxy S alone is amazing! All three phones are nice, in my opinion.

I'm liking the HD7 so far, but I'm really looking forward to more options in the market, including more free options.

Dell Venue Pro.

I'm making the switch from Verizon to T-Mobile just for this.

Get the G2, root it, put CM 6.1 on there, install winamp for music, and you're golden :)

You'd be a fool not to wait a few weeks for the Nexus S. Remember that T-mo gives you a better rate if you bring your own phone.

Heck, if I were used to the iPhone 1, I might wait all the way until the dual-cores appear early next year.

they do not give you a better rate.

Why would he wait when he said he didn't like the black plastic look?

He needs to get the G2, root that bitch, OC it and party on.

Even More Plus is still around, they've just made it harder to get, according to Engadget.

How so? I was under the impression that if you buy the phone at full price, unsubsidized, you get the Even More Plus plan?

http://mobile.engadget.com/2010/11/16/t-mobile-keeping-even-more-plus-around-but-not-online/

I haven't been to T-Mobile's site to verify, but apparently its not online anymore. You have to go to a store and specifically request it.

I just checked T-Mobile's site, doesn't show up as an option if I add the Mt4G or G2 to a cart. If I search the site for Even More Plus, it shows up, but says its incompatible with my choice of phone.

Adds are, I'd buy the phone in the store anyway just so I can verify that the hardware is good before I walk out the door, so I'd still be able to get the Even More Plus plan. Heck, that plan option was a major reason for my motivation to switch to T Mobile. Without it, they're just as expensive as AT&T and Verizon.
