Vista was such a pain. Wow.

Now that I've gone through the 2-day straight ordeal of getting Vista all nice and running and with my most frequently used software installed, how do I avoid having to go through this all over again when Vista starts to accumulate crap like all of Microsoft's OSes and it needs to be reinstalled?

Get something like Acronis, make a disk image, and hide it away somewhere?

What about if I upgrade to a new motherboard? Is there a way to not have to reinstall everything if I upgrade motherboards? I know there was a way with XP.

I'm sorry to say that your journey of frustration with Vista 64 has only begun. Within 1 to 3 weeks you will be begging to go back to XP. I did. Vista is not ready yet.

If it's Vista Business or Vista Ultimate, you can make a full system-image backup using the built-in backup feature. You will need to log on with an Admin-class account to do so, one of the few things you can't do from your Standard account. Another thing you can do is use Windows Easy Transfer, which is available on all versions of Vista (Start > type easy transfer in the Search box).

Personally, my primary system dual-boots XP and Vista x64 since early this year, and I only boot to WinXP about once or twice a month (generally to help someone through a WinXP-specific issue). Vista's "ready enough" for me, and has significant security improvements.

Keep an eye on printer drivers and other hardware - if it reinstalls itself, you're having the infamous Vista sleep-mode issue. It seems to have something to do with the way Vista uses RAM - not actually writing changes to files on the hard drive, so from time to time you'll install something, walk away only to come back and have to install it again. The only thing that seems to fix this is to install a piece of software or hardware and then turn off the computer completely - do not let it go to sleep!

Backing up your whole system after an installation is a great idea! You should be able to cram it onto 1 double layer DVD or maybe spanned across 2 of them if you have a lot of software installed. Or, you could keep an image in a seperate partition.

Norton Ghost should still be able to image your drive. You can also image the drive using a Knoppix (linux) live CD, repartition your drive, and stick the image on that partition. The good part about Knoppix is that there are some decent handbooks on it that you can buy - something to be said about computing with a book in one's hand!

I would not have agreed with you 3 weeks ago--Before I installed vista that is.

Bill Gates; I WANT MY $$ BACK!!

FUD,99% of people don't have serious issues with Vista ,FYI took me 20 minutes to install Vista x64 on my XP PC and that was via external USB DVD Lite-On burner.

Most users that upgrade to Vista x64 check they have the hardware drivers and also wise to check if you use any specialized software too, been using Vista x64 since Jan,oh and my XP pc is only used now for XP updates ,that's how stable my Vista x64 is.

Funny thing is if a XP user has install problems and I have seen a few posts ,nobody would say XP is not ready but because Vista is new they automatically blame Vista, double standards here.Remember some people unfortunately will get problems(just like some people get DOA parts or faulty harware) regardless of OS in question, its nature of PCs and anybody that has used a PC for awhile knows what I mean.

Dowload latest version then use your nero 7 key,I can't remember which Nero 7 version Vista x64 started working fine ,but it was awhile back.

Anyway latest version will have improvements so always best to install that one.
